If you are on Ravelry, check out the Soakers and Longies group. I think there are some stickied threads there about favorite patterns and yarns. You might have to hunt a little for the crochet patterns but I know I've seen some.
Question for pp or others, does the wool soften when you wash and lanolize it? Because I have knitted myself hats out of lamb's pride and cascade 220, and found them too itchy for my head.

I haven't settled
If anything, the lanolin gives the wool a waxy/tacky feel. Depends on how much you lanolize.
Lamb's Pride has a small amount of mohair in it, that may be why you find it coarse.
Maybe if you can find a non-superwash merino or BFL? </p
