Babies: 9 - 12 Months

gas leak!!! (long)

eek!  my little one's (b/g twins) stay at my parents' house during the week while i'm at work.  every once in a while my mom and i would smell natural gas coming from somewhere in the house. it's very very faint, and it comes and goes.  my parents actually called before i got pregnant b/c of the smell, and nothing was found.  a couple of months ago we called the gas company who sent a guy to check for leaks, and again, he found none.  so we were wondering where the H-E-double hockey sticks the smell was coming from, and we were convinced it wasn't gas (even though it smelled like it) since the gas company said there weren't any leaks.

so just yesterday (sunday) my father was cleaning around the fireplace, opened the metal door things and lo and behold, he smelled gas.  he immediately called the gas company, who again sent someone.  he did his check around the fireplace, the machine did not go off, but once he stuck it inside the fireplace and into a corner, it finally went off, meaning there was a leak. my babies were around this stuff for 6 months!!!  of course i then started googling gas leaks and infants and inhalation...i should not have done that.  i called poison control (upon the pediatician's front desk lady's suggestion) and he said he's pretty sure it did no harm since he gas company's people didn't catch it with their machines before and b/c it was in the fireplace the leak probably went upwards and out through the vent.

(huge breath)...so, should i just rest easy and believe things are ok?  babies seem fine and poison control said they're probably fine.  when i go into the ped's office on wednesday (for ds's follow up appt for an ear infection) i will definitely ask.

Re: gas leak!!! (long)

  • Scary! But I think it's safe to say as long as your babies are acting fine and poison control said it's fine then it probably really is fine. I mean your parents actually live in the house and they're fine right? I would probably follow up with the pediatrician just so they are aware but I wouldn't worry about it.
