Water Labor/Birth

I just found out that my hospital has tubs for labor and delivery.  Anyone have experience with a med-free birth using a tub?  Do you think it helped you manage the pain?  I have no idea what to expect, and I am hoping that the tub will eliminate the need for an epi.

Re: Water Labor/Birth

  • I spent a lot of time in the bathtub at the hospital.  I was induced- so my contracations were more intense with little to no rest in between.  I was also able to go through it all without pain meds.  I thought the contractions hurt while in the tub, but once I got out of the tub- way worse.  So I think the tub helped relieve some of the pain.

    Good luck :)

  • Laboring in the tub did not help me, but I think that I am the minority.

  • I didn't because I was confined to my bed due to severe probelms, but I know many a women who swear by tub births. I'd say use it if you can.  Cause going without pain meds, and being induced with cervadil and pitocin and having to stay on your left side the entire time is clearly not a picnic.  A tub would have sounded fantastic.
  • i had pitocin because my water broke at 36 weeks w/o contractions. there was a whirlpool in my room but i couldn't do it. the thought of being wet just irritated me! i did do the whole thing without pain meds. it is way different than you would expect so try it if you feel like it. i thought i would love the tub but i had no desire to try it. i did however give birth on my side completely naked...not how i pictured it. but it was completely amazing and calm. good luck! (you can definitely do it w/o the epi!!)Wink
  • I loved the tub, while I couldn't give birth in it, it really helped with the pain.  I had really bad back labor, but was able to do it all without pain meds.  Good luck, you will quickly figure out what will and won't work for you during labor.

  • I was at a birth center and loved the tub. DH poured water over my belly for a couple hours and it was heavenly. I wanted to give birth in the tub but wasnt pushing so well and did much better in the bed. I would say it certainly cant hurt to give it a try. I bet you love it!
