Baby Names

It seems as if....

Most ppl who post on this board must be over the age of 40 having children... Why do most of you come up with names like, Eleanor, Winnifred, Carol, and Jeanette?

Re: It seems as if....

  • I'm not a regular on this board by any means, but I do lurk often. I think your post is extremely presumptuous and rude. I find all of the many styles and names on this board interesting, informative, and helpful. If you lurked more, I think you'd find that this board has a wide variety of names.

  • I'm 37.  Part of the reason I like more traditional names for children that I feel will suit them at many stages of life is that I've BEEN at more stages of life than a lot of younger moms and experienced how my name affects people's perceptions of me.  This reinforces my belief that a child is better served by a classic name like Eleanor than a trendy name like Kinley or whatever.  There are younger ladies on this board who have thought this through and come to the same conclusion.  There are older women who like trendy names.  I suspect older parents in general tend to gravitate toward more traditional names (less to do with age and more to do with educational level and thus delayed childbearing), but I doubt more than a fraction of the women  on this board are over 40, it's just that as a community we tend to like similar names, though not always.  Not that I would have a problem if we were all over 40.  Would you?

  • I am 21, FAR from 40. I find Eleanor, Carol, and Jeanette to be great names that I would love to see on a child. I think the names are classic and age well. But then again I have always been told I seem older than I am!

  • Why does it matter?

Each forum and board has it's own style. If you don't like this one then find another. I think you are just annoyed because it isn't your style. If you were to stick around and pay attention you would learn that there are several different naming styles here.

That cracked me up! Age has nothing to do with good taste :
  • I'm primarily a lurker, too.  And, I agree with you that this board tends to favor classic/traditional names.  Nothing wrong with that.  I, however, do NOT like them. At all.  And guess what...I'm 38.  I would actually say that the traditional name trend is more of a younger parent phenomenon.  Those names are just plain really popular right now.  It is what it is.  We shall survive.  Smile

  • Nope not 40 and I like a variety of names. I've been a lurker and occasional poster for about 4 years now and this board goes through stages but so does the naming trends. I do know that people will give honest feedback and I find that helpful.

  • I'm new here, so not a reg or anything. But how silly. I'm far from 40, and I adore many classic names. I also like others- I enjoy a mix.  But age really has nothing to do with it.  I have a 21 year old friend who just named her daughter Catherine.  And I know a 42 year mom who named her kid Neveah. So..?  It's all about personal tastes.
