Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Switching formulas & reflux

Good Morning Everyone! My son is turning 6 months old this Sunday and my husband and I are talking about trying new formulas. Right now he is on Nutramigen, he has reflux and got really fussy when I had dairy while I was BF. He is starting to eat baby food and keeps his formula down a little better with the help of Zantac & Reglan. Has anyone else had luck weaning their little one off Nutramigen to something else without it upsetting their tummy to bad? We like the fact that Nutamigen is easy on his tummy and doesn?t cause him to get constipated but it cost SOOO much money (especially when he just spits a lot of it back up) Any advice or suggestion would be greatly appreciated!!

God Bless!

  • We use Similac Sensitive for Spit-Up, and it has worked well for us; however, DS does not seem to be sensitive to dairy. If you need a formula that is not milk-based, you might want to try a soy formula. Some people add a little bit of rice cereal (very small amount) to thicken it a tad for reflux babies. The Similac that I use already has rice starch in it, so I do not add any.

  • thank you for the reply! Nutramigen is soy based so we are considering contuing with another soy based formula but we also thought maybe he has outgrown the dairy issue. We do add rice ceral to his bottles to thicken it up a bit which as also helped. I'll have to do some reasearch on the Similac since we have been using enfamil. Thanks again! Yes

Hi, our little guy was on Nutramigen until 5 months.  He was put on it for extreme fussiness, reflux and colic.  The colic and fussiness disappeared around the 4 month mark but i was afraid to change to something new as it seemed so gentle on his system.  I decided to give it a go as the reflux had never improved anyway even with meds.  So we switched to Enfamil for infants.  I weaned him over the course of a week or so and did notice he seemed a little gassy for a few days but then his system settled and he took to it no problem.  The reflux is still with him, some days worse than others.  Sometimes it bothers him and sometimes it doesn't but I'm glad we made the switch.

  • We started with Nutramigen and he still had issues.  We tried Enfamil Newborn, then the Enfamil Sensitive, then the Enfamil soy based (that made things 100x worse).  We ended up going back to the regular Enfamil and now he is on the infant (not newborn) formula.  He was prescribed Zantac which worked ok for a while then he was prescribed Prevacid which did nothing for him.

    What made it better:

We made sure we burped him often while feeding, and tummy sleeping helped too. We started taking him to a chiropractor and started using Colic Calm (the most amazing stuff ever!).  I think it was the combo of chiro and Colic Calm but I was amazed at how quick the Colic Calm worked.  They say Colic Calm is a type of gripe water but it was not like any gripe water we had seen or tried.  After only a week we stopped his Zantac.  I say the Colic Calm is a magic potion.  You can get it at Walgreens.  Good luck!
