Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Weaning and Depression

I EP with DD until 6 months and then introduced formula.  I slowly started reducing the amount of times I pumped a day.  I decided to stop pumping last week.  I feel like since then I have been really irratable and depressed.  I feel like I am in a funk and not myself at all.  I have not had a period yet either.  I am attributing it to the weaning.  Is there anyone else who has gone through this, and how long did it last?  I know some of it has to do with guilt, but I know not all of it.

Re: Weaning and Depression

  • I haven't weaned yet, but I've heard that this does happen. All of the hormones fluctuating and evening themselves out.. just like during/after pregnancy. I'm sure you'll go back to normal! I'm sorta nervous about this as well, since I had a hard time shortly after pregnancy with the depressed/irritable moods. :(

Just give it time. Good luck!!

  • Experiencing the EXACT same thing right now. My son is gonna be 8 months old. I stopped over the weekend, only pumping once in 24 hours, and I felt AWFUL. Mood swings, crying, the whole 9 yards. I haven't had a period yet either, so maybe it's coming back and it's just PMS, but I will say, I went back and pumped again 12 hours later and felt better hormonally after that. Curious what others have to say.

  • I went through it and it does get better.  For about 2 weeks after I totally weaned I felt this way.  I cried constantly and just felt completely depressed.  It will go away.
  • It is really hard.  I have been so tempted to just start pumping again, but I know I will only have to go through this all over again.  I just can't wait until it passes.  Thanks ladies
