Breastfeeding

sttn

So I read all these posts about 5, 6, 7, 8 weeks old babes sttn... im wondering if they are all ff ? ... I am breastfeeding and wonder how much this really changes my lil guys ability to sttn... I dont want to supplement but im getting a lil jealous of the sleepers.... do u think its a developmental thing or formula vs. breast milk issue?

Re: sttn

  • I think it's mostly made up.  Some babies STTN then go back to waking up a few times a night and these parents claim the babies still STTN.  My friend does this.  She claims her baby STTN but really he STTN like once a week and other times she gives him a bottle.

I would totally not worry about what other people say about their babies STTN.  Some do.  Some don't.  Actually most don't.  Who knows.  Some people make stuff up too.  I think it's a developmental thing.

Also when I was a party recently a mom was bragging to the other moms about how her 5 mo old was STTN.  She said her ped. told her she didn't need to wake and feed her baby anymore and she was SO happy to talk about how they did a few nights of sleep training and "poof" she was STTN!  She said her daughter cried for 1/2 an hr the first few nights but was no big deal.  Oh, did I add that her 5 month old was the TINIEST baby i've ever seen and weighed only 12 lbs???

So you know what? I don't envy this mom or her life.  My 13 month old still wakes once a night on avg and it's no big deal anymore.  She'll grow out of it soon. *hopefully*

anyway I gave up caring a long time ago about people and what they consider to be STTN or how they sleep train their babies.

  • I don't believe formula helps any more than BF. My LO STTN at 8 weeks and did for a month, then she started waking up at least once a night to eat. Now she does pretty good and will sleep 8 hours or so at a time. I still EBF and she is 5 months old. I think it just depends on the baby and has nothing to do with how or what you are feeding them.

  • Here is what I have read. Babies struggle to connect their sleep cycles in and out of REM sleep till 6 months ish. It is a skill so different babies can learn it at different times. So even a FF baby may wake in the middle of the night because they don't yet know how to sleep. If you think your babies is waking for hunger you can try the tanking them up stragety which is one of te things we did so I BFed at 5pm, 6pm and then 7pm to try fill her tummy before bed.

  • I just dont want him missing out on getting a good nights because of my choice to ebf !!
  • I think a few rare babies are good sleepers and they are the ones that get talked about. My DD was mostly EBF, we did have a few weeks where I gave her formula at night due to slow weight gain/low supply and I didn't see any difference in her sleep.
  • I just read about this in The Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers.  The author says that formula or breastfeeding doesnt affect a baby's ability to STTN.  What matters is the amount their eating before bed.  So, the author said that breastfeeding moms should make sure the baby has a good latch and emptying the breasts.

My baby is 3 months old, and he eats at 6:30 PM then sleeps, eats at 10PM then sleeps until about 4 PM, and wakes for the day around 6:30 AM.  I'm not implying that this is a good schedule, but sometimes it's nice to hear what other babies do.

  • Every baby is different. I used to be worried about it too, but now I just don't care. Mine slept through the night consistently for a month when he was 7 months old. Now he is almost 12 months, and wakes up once a night. Once in awhile he does sttn. I've had other moms tell me that their sleep patterns change very often, which is very true from what I've seen.

I'm still BF, by way. GL!
