Corned beef?

DH and I went out to lunch today before our Book of Mormon date and I got a carved corned beef Reuben. I specifically asked the waiter if it was lunch meat or carved and he said it was carved and made daily. The sandwich was hot, but now I am all listeria freaked. I have an appointment Tuesday and will ask my doctor, but does anyone else know if this is okay?

Thanks, ladies!

Re: Corned beef?

  • I am extremely cautious when it comes to this suff. If it was made and carved daily then I would eat it. The fact that it was hot is an added bonus. Tons of ladies eat cold cuts with no issues. I understand the caution though b/c I am the same way. I think it's because it gives me something I have control over. Hope it was yummy!

  • If it was heated I wouldn't stress it.  I am in the other boat of I had several cold sandwiches throughout my pregnancy.  I am a moderation person.  Also if it is cooked and carved daily then to me it's not lunch meat and no different than eating a pot roast sandwich etc.

You have a much larger chance of contracting listeria from salads and veggies than lunch meat.  If you check the FDA website on recalls, most listeria scares in the last year have been on fresh fruits and veggies.

  • Eating lunch meat isn't going to automatically give you lysteria poisoning, it is just more likely than with a hot sandwich. Don't stress out too much, I am going to guess you will be fine!

  • DH is the one that freaks out about thisnot me! But I told him I need a corned beef sandwich around st. Patty's day and that as long as the sandwich is heated, it's fine!!

  • When i was pregnant my ob told me that i could eat packaged lunchmeat luke turkey, ham,or roast beef but not from the deli! He said that there is too big of a risk with the deli because of the slicers not being cleaned well enough! Also the few times that i went to subway i got a hot chicken sandwich and i made them heat it after it was made! I would ask your dr on his/her thoughts on the subject though! I also agree with pp about fruits and vegies!

  • I think it's fine. I ate at Subway all the time while I was pregnant. My doctor said as long as the meat was heated to the point of steaming it's fine.
