What I want to know, since I hate math, is what is the practical application of this exercise? Why do we need to know this? The last time my boss asked me to add, subtract and mulitply in the right order in an equation was, oh, NEVER!
Sigh. I was about to say zero. I did the equation in the right order but apparently can't add 5+8. I fail.
You did go to school in Georgia.
ETA what I meant to add before I prematurely hit Post.
How do you feel about someone whose father was from Tenn, went to East Tenn State, married a woman from Long Island who was a Gamecock, but raised their child in GA for 6 years? Can that person hang, or does the Yankee blood trump the GA'ness and completely disqualify them?

Folks in sales and financial fields use math like this all of the time.
Check out all of these formulas. Lots of addition and division and subtraction all in one formula.
Part of my job is writing reports that call on various SQL database fields. The report does all of the math on the backend so the financial analysts enter the product/date/etc type of data they want.. click "Run"... the report pulls all of the requested information from the fields, does the math/logic in the background that I wrote, and outputs it in a nice spreadsheet/graph for them.
Math is fun.

I agree it can be fun when you actually get the right answer. However, when it came to calc., it stopped being fun for me. Numbers make head hurt, argh (hit club on ground).
I did like logic in college. I liked writing out the logic problems, proofs, etc. It was very satisfying. I am actually good at math, but I am way better at reading, and I get upset when I don't get something right. So math made me unhappy, and we took some time apart to think about things.

I never went to college. So my formal math education was Algebra II. Maybe that's why I think its fun lol.

Re: Smart People come in...
ETA: 3
I guess I'm not smart. oops
I say 3.
Co worker answer was 18
please excuse my dear aunt sally
I say you're right. You are supposed to multiply, then add & subtract. I'm awful at math and I remember that much.
It should read 5+ (2x4) - 10 = 3
5 + (8) - 10 = 3
13 - 10 = 3
At least that is how I think it is supposed to be. Math was my worst subject.
Parenthesis, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, then subtraction. I think.

FTR that child went to school in FL (go Gators).
The answer is:
the problem is not written properly
Therefore, it is a question "FAIL".
Union?
This is all that matters. See you in September, Ma'am.
I think it is pretty sad that I can think of 3 counties off of the top of my head that are suited to your description.

Come back!

Brackets.
It's a Canadian thing!!!!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_operations
EDIT: Also, since Multiply and Divide are of equal value apparently- M or D can come first. As is Add and Subtract.
3
order of operations, ftw!

Multiply first, then add/subtract from left to right.
PEMDAS.
What is a Zed?
Canada is awesome! I stand by BEDMAS. I will teach my daughter BEDMAS even while she is in her American school learning PEDMAS.
Also, in our house it's Zed, not Zee.
This!
