Dirty Girl Mud Run

So I am supposed to be doing the Dirty Girl Mud Run on March 23 with a bunch of my co-workers. I'm not 100% sure I'm comfortable doing it now though since I am pregnant, I figure I'll be almost 11 weeks by the race. The main thing holding me back is that I hadn't started getting in shape for it yet by the time I found out I was pregnant and now I just don't have the energy to train at all. I'm mainly worried I just won't be able to keep up and I am pretty sure that being pregnant will keep me from doing some of the obstacles. Anyone who has done one of these races before or something similar having any thoughts on running it while pregnant? For those who haven't heard of this it is a 5k run with about 8 obstacle courses set up in between that are all muddy. It can include things such as having to climb rope walls and crawl in the mud. It is not a timed race, just a for fun thing, and you can go around the obstacles if needed.

Re: Dirty Girl Mud Run

  • I would say no. I have been told and read that your not suppose to get your heart rate above 150. that would get your heart rate above 150
  • I would say def not. But maybe you should talk to your doc about it.

  • I would take a look at the waiver that they make you sign and see if they say anything about being pregnant.

I've done the Warrior Dash and it was so much fun.  The obstacles were tough but you could skip any of them.  It was pretty laid back.  If you are comfortable with it you could do it but take it really easy... lightly jog and only do the obstacles you are comfortable with... I don't think crawling though the mud would be a problem but I'd probably skip any climbing or things where you might fall.

I had actually signed up for another Warrior Dash for next September- I will obviously be trying to transfer my membership... but at 11 weeks I might be willing to do it but take it super easy.

  • If it was a reg run I am pretty sure it would be fine, but with a mud run there is a lot more of a chance to get hurt. So I would say no to the mud run.

  • just thought of another consideration... at least with the Warrior Dash the after party was all about the beer ;) so if that's not an environment you would be comfortable with that may be another strike against it.  I don't really know about the dirty girl mud run and whether it has the same vibe.

  • Add me to another vote info for the mud run, even though a regular run would be fine, if you had been training prior to pregnancy. The heart rate restriction is a bit old school, but there is definitely a reason doctors don't want you to start a crazy exercise regime after you are already pregnant. Vigorous exercise causes oxygen to be diverted to your brain and muscles and away from the placenta, because your body is ultimately selfish s d will not starve you ofo the to benefit your baby. Hence,if you feel out of breath from exertion, your baby is feeling it worse. That said, I walked and jogged a half marathon in my first tri last time and will do the same at about 16 weeks thus time. But I take it easy, don't get out if breath, drink lots of water, etc.

The mud thing would freak me out, as one of the earliest changes with pregnancy is that your tendons and ligaments start to loosen up a lot. I wouldn't put myself Ina position where I thought I was likely to slip or trip on a muddy surface. One ankle injury I early pregnancy, and you lose a lot of your ability to keep active and healthy over the next 8 or 9 months...
  • I'd do it but I think it depends on your comfort level and fitness level. Like you said, it's not a timed race, it's just for fun, and you can skip obstacles you're not comfortable with.

  • I wouldn't do it. I have done mud runs and they can be tough. My gf had to drop off our team when she got pg because the paperwork said no pregnant woman, but that was for a foam/mud run.
Check the paperwork if it says no then you have your answer. If it says nothing I would be hesitant.

  • I think it just depends on how you feel.. I did Warrior Dash not pregnant and it was just a laid back fun time...really people were not "competitive" and you could do it how you wanted to if you needed to walk you walked..there was water at different stops as well and you could not do any obstacle you felt not good with.

  • The heart rate measurement rule is outdated.  The current thought is, listen to your body, and don't increase your activity level significantly from what you were doing pre-pregnancy.  With my midwife's blessing, I'm planning on doing a 2.5-mile open water swim when I'm at 12 weeks, but I've been training at the same level for months before getting pregnant.  I also plan to do a 5k a few weeks after.

But you mentioned that you hadn't been training before.  So maybe now isn't the best time to start...

I agree. My doc told me to exercise but stay away from anything crazy where I might fall. This seems like it falls into the latter category.

  • I'm registered for the same run a few weeks later and have some concerns as well. My team is fine with me taking it easy though and I'm just going to forgo the obstacles that look rough and slow jog.

  • Thanks for the replies ladies.  I haven't told work yet about being pregnant so I didn't really want to talk to the ladies running this with me so I needed advice.  This just helps confirm that I should go with my first instinct which is to withdraw from it!  There is always next year and I can still go and support my girls!

  • I did muddy buddy at six weeks pregnant with dd. It is a six mile race alternating running and mountain biking with obstacles in between. I had been running daily before that, though and figured it was still early enough that the baby was very well protected should I fall. You could probably take it easy and just pass any obstacles that seem like too much. If you don't want to tell, tough can blae it on an injury.
I am signed up for warrior dash in september and will definitely be passing my registration off to my sister.
  • I'm doing the Color Me Rad run on April 7th. It's a charity "run", but I'll be walking it with my friends.

  • I ran the Dirty girl last year. I would say that about 1/2 the woman walked almost the whole time. Also all of the obstacles have the options to walk around if you don't want to do them if you have someone to hang back with you willing to walk or take it easy I'd say go ahead.
