Twin A & B in same sac .. questions for mom's w/ same sac twins

Hello folks!

I know I have not been on in a bit. A lot has been happening. My twins were born at 31 weeks and are doing awesome! They are going on 9 months old now. However (... and this is going to sound crazy) my 19 yr old daughter and her fiance are now expecting and guess what?? Twins! Crazy huh?

I am a bit concerned though because her twins are in the same sac. They have nothing dividing them. They share the sac and placenta. In the ultrasound you could see they had their arm wrapped into on anothers arm. They are really close in the ultrasound. I am wondering if there are any twin mom's on here who had twins in the same sac.. no membrane dividing. She is 11 weeks right now and the doc she has is supposed to be the best in this area. She told her she will be seen every 2 weeks and they will be delivered at 32 weeks if not sooner due to risk or cord entanglement. I have heard all the worst case scenerio's and they have me freaked out!

My twins were boy/girl twins in their own sacks.. so this is one worry I did not have when I was pregnant.  Would love to hear from others who had success with same sac identical twins.

Thanks!

Re: Twin A & B in same sac .. questions for mom's w/ same sac twins

  • Congrats on becoming a grandma!  My twins did have a dividing membrane so they were mo/di.  If her twins truly are in the sac amniotic sac they are termed as mo/mo.  Since she is only 11 weeks now there is a chance they may still find a membrane and will probably look for one at every u/s.  It's a very high risk pregnancy but with close monitoring there can be good outcomes.  Like you said though, she will definitely have to deliver prematurely.  At the hospital I was at they told me mo/mo moms are admitted at 24 weeks for continuous monitoring so they can deliver if fetal distress occurs.  Lots of good wishes to her!
  • Yeah they were telling her that she could deliver as early as 26 weeks. They said the longer they are in there after 24 weeks the more risk it is to them. They searched for a long time with a 4d ultrasound and could see the babies have their arms wrapped into each others. So there is nothing to divide them she said she is certain because otherwise the babies could not hold each other they way they were.

  • Normally, I would say that she still has time for them to find a membrane, but it sounds like these are true mo/mo twins! Mine were mo/di, so I can't share any insight. I wish the best for your daughter and her babies though. Keep us updated on their progress!

  • sounds like they could be mo/mo, but there's still hope. do you know if she went to an early ultrasound and if they saw yolk sacs?

if she hasn't been to the message boards at monoamniotic.org, she should go there. they are a fantastic resource.

i have several friends with momo twins who are happy, healthy kiddos now. so don't lose hope!

  • Judt wanted to say best luck to you and your grandbabies. They thought mine were in same sac for quite some time but found membrane. But you said they were touching eachother so sounds like mo/mo.

  • hello i am in the same situation your daughter, i am going on hospital bed rest at 26 weeks which is early April. they never found a membrane and i am 21 weeks right now. i was told to take it easy and stop working in January. now he sees cord entanglement but he expects that they are in the same sac. But just stay positive and try not to worry as much. congratulations to your daughter and i forgot i am having mono/mono girls.

  • My twins were mo/di, but I have heard many happy outcomes for mo/mo twins. Good luck to your daughter!
