Pregnant after IF

when to contact OB and maybe MFM?

I'll have my second beta tomorrow. I've been here before and have even made it to 8weeks then had a loss, but I was constantly worried about the pregnancy from the beginning so I never even thought about this question. Anyway, when is it a good time to call the OB to let them know? I know I'll be under the care of my RE until 12 weeks. Do I just wait until I am released? Do I call them soon? And also, I'm thinking about possibly seeing a MFM with my RPL and the fact that I'm on Lovenox now. When would be a good time to find one?

TIA, sorry for all the crazy questions.

Re: when to contact OB and maybe MFM?

  • I'd call and make an appt now.  Do you plan to have NT scans done?  If so, those are usually done within weeks 11-13.

I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority, since my RE basically released me after the 2nd beta (had u/s done with OB).  I had my first appt with MFM around 8-9wks.  I'm not sure what the RE can do for you at this point that is related to your baby, so if it were me, I'd want to be seeing someone else.  Can't hurt to see both for a couple of weeks if your RE won't relase you sooner.

  • As soon as I was pregnant, my RE sent my OB some sort of letter letting them know.  My RE's instructions were to make a first appt with the OB between 8 and 10 weeks.  Before then, the RE is doing betas, b/w, a few ultrasounds, etc.  So, the OB won't really do anything different, and the RE is better at controlling your meds.  I saw my OB at about 9 1/2 weeks, and at that point, she ordered the 1st Tri screening from the MFM.  So they called me the next day to schedule it.

But, if you've got other issues you're concerned about, you may want an MFM appt earlier.  I'd call your nurse/RE and see what they recommend.  Good luck tomorrow!

  • Oy, the only MFM in the area that is associated with the same hospital my OB is only makes appointments through your primary OB. I guess I'll talk to the nurse tomorrow when she calls with the beta number. Who even knows what it's going to be at this point, I don't want to get too ahead of myself....Embarrassed
  • I saw the MFM at 6 weeks they established care and made a game plan. I would make an OB appt for 10 weeks so you can make decisions about testing

  • I contacted my OB after my first ultra sound with RE and I was glad I did because they wanted me to come in at 8 weeks which was only a week and a half away. OBs vary so much with first appointment protocol but if you are toying with the idea of an MFM I'd call sooner than later!

  • I'd call now. They may want you to at least get some blood work done. I've been seeing my OB for the last 3+ weeks for OB care but I'm still seeing my RE for hormone support. I'm just over 8 weeks today. I was told you have to have a referral for a MFM. They only see high risk patients so your OB has to declare you high risk. My OB refers everyone to MFM for prenatal testing. I got that referral today for my NT scan which will be sometime between 12-14 weeks. I was told I needed to make that appointment tomorrow to be able to see him in time.
  • My RE told me to call after our first u/s at 5w6d.  And when I still hadn't a week later, basically booked me an appointment since I was going to stay in the same hospital anyway.  I'd ask your RE.. Fx for a great beta tomorrow!
