Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Tooth brushing

What is appropriate at this age with a lot of teeth?

Up until now we were just using one of those rubber nubby toothbrushes, and wiping down with a washcloth.  In the past two weeks DS's molars came in, and his canines are poking through.  He will soon have 16 teeth!  Should we start using toothpaste at this point?

Re: Tooth brushing

  • We started using a toothbrush as soon as she had a couple teeth at around 1 year (ie. letting her play and chew on it) and tooth paste and really "brushing" when she had a few more teeth, like at 18 months. She only has 8 teeth now and I let her brush her teeth with toothpaste and tell her to do top, bottom and back, and then it's my turn to do top, bottom and back.

  • We started using toothpaste every day around 7 or 8 months I think. If I remember correctly it's not really necessary until age 2, but DS likes the fruity flavor so we use it every day.

Same.   I let her play with it a little, but DH or I always get the final say and do top, bottom and gums.

Hallelujah, it's a miracle, I have children AND a signature!

  • IT says on the toothpaste tube not to be used until 2 or 3...I forget which.  We just bought a Thomas the train toothbrush with orajel toothpaste for after the rubber finger brush is ready to be gone.

  • we have a toddler toothbrush and toothpaste that we've been using since DD only had a couple teeth. The toothbrush is just softer bristles and the toothpaste is a fruity flavor and doesn't have fluoride. Sometimes I still have a little trouble with her letting me brush her teeth...she usually just wants to take it from me and suck the toothpaste off of it LOL but I can usually get in there a few times for a few seconds each and do a decent job of brushing them.

  • My pedi recommended starting with a toothbrush and non-flouride toothpaste since he was a year and had 8 teeth.  He loves playing with the tooth brush and I love encouraging brushing!
