Nursing School Dummy Birth

I work at a nursing school where they have a SimCare Lab.  It is a lab, for those that don't know, that has dummies that can talk, breath, eat, etc.  Well, there is one that gives birth.  For a charity that the school supports, there is a baby shower today.  All of the items collected at the shower will be given to a place that helps troubled women get back on their feet.  The gifts will be helping their children.  After the shower, the dummy will deliver her baby.  There are things I don't want to know about!  I would prefer to be surprised during delivery that things like pooping yourself happens.  Anyway, I am trying to miss this experience.  I already gave my gift...a week ago.  With it being said that I would prefer to miss the birth, I really want cake.

  • Lol. Do you have to stay? Just go eat cake and leave. I am guessing it can't be THAT bad though.

  • I might be able to go and then leave.  It probably will be bad as these dummies are like humans that nursing students can't kill.  They are fully interactive.  There will be lots of fluids and basically like watching a live birth.

  • I read the title of your post "Nursery School Dummy Birth." I was thinking a nursery school teacher gave birth at work or something. I'm glad I read it wrong!

If you haven't watched a birth you really should. Even if its the dummy birth. It is incredibly empowering to see what our bodies can do, are made to do.  Nothing to be scared of. I mean... in a few months that baby is coming out. The more fear you can dissipate in the meantime the better.

I agree. I would love to see the dummy birth.  Sounds pretty cool to me!

  • I'm having the opposite reaction. I want you to film it and send it to me. That sounds so cool.

I agree with this. I was in the room when my younger sister was born, I was 8 years old at the time. I didn't see the birth I stayed in a far corner, but witnessing my mom labor was a very positive experience.  When my nephew was born, I did see a lot more,I was 18 then. It was again a positive experience for me.

I agree. But then again I sit around and watch birth videos online alllll the time.

  • Those dummies are really cool. The junior college near where I went to high school had a nursing program. Every year they made the high school students go for a tour. I've only ever seen the dummies cough.

It would be interesting to compare how they show the SimCare lady give birth to actual births. Now I just have to wonder, how accurate is it? Do they have varied situations that the dummy can simulate?

I have to agree. I was with both of my SILs when they labored and saw both of my nephews being born. It was pretty amazing. To me the hardest thing to watch was them laboring, not the fluids and stuff. And hey, you're a nursing student...better get used to it!!

  • I'm confused why you wouldn't want to know what's going on with your own body during birth.  This makes no sense to me. To each her own, I guess.

  • I feel, and this is just my personal opinion, that knowledge can be both power and fear.  Knowledge of certain things can make one formidable and make things easier for a person.  However, certain kinds of knowledge create fear.  I don't want to go into the delivery room fearing everything and thinking of all the different outcomes that could happen.  I want to be in the moment.  Fear takes you out of the moment.  With that being said, I am convinced that the less I know, the less scared I will be.  Or embarrassed.  I'm that person that tries to be proper and I'm a little OCD.  It leads to high embarrassment sometimes.
