1st Trimester

Opinion international travel

Hi ladies I would love your thoughts. I'm 10 weeks, first pregnancy. Before we were expecting, I had applied and recently received and offer for an international position in Europe. I had to postpone my trip due to bleeding drs orders. I haven't had any issues the last two weeks and the dr cleared me for US travel but said international was still risky and left the decision up to me. Does anyone have experience with making such a long flight during pregnancy? Biggest concern is blood clots associated with limited movement on the 8 hour flight. Thanks!

Re: Opinion international travel

  • We moved from England back to the United States when I was 14 weeks pregnant.  The initial plane ride was about 11 hours but we traveled for a total of 18 hours that day!  I just tried to move around as much as possible.  Usually on those flights you only have to wear your seat belt for a short period of time so get up and walk up and down the aisle every couple of hours.

  • I would get up and walk a couple of laps every hour. Turbulence allowing I guess. Otherwise I would do calf pumps etc.

  • I flew a ten hour non-stop international flight at 35 weeks. Drinks lots of water and walk around some. You'll be fine.

  • If the doctor's major concern is blood clots, that's a pretty standard concern for all pregnant women.  None of us can tell you what kind of risk to take, but if you choose to go, you could minimize the risk of blood clots by getting an aisle seat and walking frequently and by investing in some pregnancy-specific compression stockings/tights.  That's what I intend to do when I fly internationally late in 2nd tri (10 hour flight) and in mid-3rd tri (6 hour flight).
