GD question

Okay a week ago I took my 3 hour and they said I failed it.  I am not a firm believer and let me explain why.   1. I fasted like was supposed to.  2. I had a 10:15 u/s appt  so they took the 1 hour on time, but the 2 hour the nurse this when I went in to learn how to use the glucometer but she gave me a copy of the results and underlined the times the drew the blood.   My problem with this is I watched them type in the times and print out the whole strip of stickers in advance.

I have been tracking my blood sugar Since Tuesday PLUS I am keeping a journal of everything I eat, the amount, the time I eat and when I test plus the score.   I have yet to meet the 120 cut off and I have NOT changed my eating habits.
Just for fun I stopped at McDonalds today and ate a fish sandwich, medium fry, AND a medium strawberry shake.    I can here you guys shivering already.   I took my blood right no schedule and it was 133.  Now I know that the cut off is 120 but it did not sky rocket like I thought it would.  I am sure even the most perfect person would jump after a high carb meal like this.   I did tell my mom  about this (she used to work at the hospital) and she was suprised it was so low she said it is not unusual to see them jump to the 300's.

Now I know you guys are not doctors and I am not looking for a diagnosis.  Just wondering what your scores are roughly if you were to dare eat such a meal.

My normal meals are:
tenderloins (not breaded)on white bread bun and fries.. score 110
hamburgers and fries (baked)on white bread bun.... score 113
minute steak (not breaded) on bun and fresh frozen vegies... score93
frozen pizza, 2 slices .... score 104
normal lunch:
Tuna fish sandwich on white bread, handful of sour cream and onion chips 1 orange and 1/2 can of pepsi..... score  107
Breakfast is usually a bowl of cereal and skim milk .... score 93

Should I maybe suggest doing the test again?   Or just take my findings in and talk to the Dr. about it Wed. when I have my normal 2 week appt. ?

Re: GD question

  • People have varying levels of how severe their GD is.  You may have just barely failed, or are even borderline.  But since GD can get worse through out the pregnancy, maybe they figured if you're that close to failing, or just barely failed they consider you to have it since you likely will later in your pregnancy anyway.

It sounds like what you're eating is working for you, so if there any real problem with being considered to have GD even if maybe the test was wrong and you don't?  Personally I would just take the diagnosis and keep doing what you're doing than take the test again.

  • I am in kind of the same situation. My post meal numbers are never above 100 and my fastings average 7386. I just had a candid conversation with my midwife and she ran an A1C which came back at 4.6 which is pretty normal. Since I clearly failed the test though I really didn't pursue it further. It isn't hurting me or my baby to prick my finger a few times a day.

If it is causing you some potential problems like not getting the birth you desire, maybe talk to your doctor about a retest. Otherwise if you just have to write down your numbers it doesn't seem like a big deal. Good luck! :

  • not causing me problems.   One thing I am going to discuss with my Dr. is since we are a boring family and basically eat the same things each week.  We rarely go out for dinner, maybe once a month or two, is to see if I can just do a spot check a couple times a week or if we eat something out of the ordinary.

  • The GD lab test is a pure sugar shock on your system - you are not digesting fats, proteins, and other substances that break down sugars differently like you would in the real world.

You may be more glucose intolerant than actually have gestational diabetes but typically the treatment involves continued testing and diet monitoring, just like GD. Another thing to consider is that you may be GI now but your numbers typically get worse the further into pregnancy you get, so while you may be OK now you may not be able to get away with those type of meals in a few weeks (if your profile is right you're not due for a few months).

The 120 cutoff is a range... I usually don't come anywhere near my cut off (130/1 Hour). In my case my nutritionist and OB cut me back to testing every other day or so after a month of numbers. As for the 300 range not being "unusual" after a carb heavy meal, I've never heard of that. 300+ is considered dangerous, especially in pregnancy.

  • I know GD is tough and it's frustrating when you don't really feel like you have it. I failed my 1 hour with a 175. I failed the 3 hour due to a high fasting (97) and a high 2 hour- I can't remember the number, but it was about 15 points high. This happened at 8 weeks. I tested 4x a day for the next 10 weeks. At 18 weeks I showed my OB that I'd yet to have a "high number". My cutoff is 140 at 1 hour. Usually I get a 105-120 and I've not changed much about my diet, but have become more conscience is about what I eat. My A1C at 8 weeks was 5.4, I just had it drawn again and it was 4.8. So I've obviously made some changes, without really changing anything major. Anyway- my OB let me go down to 2x a day pokes. I've too "challenged" my body to see what would happen if I ate well outside my carb limit. Last week, I ate McDonalds breakfast, bacon, egg, and cheese buscuit, hashbrown, and a small caramel mocha. Total was 93 carbs. I'm allowed 15-30 for breakfast and I got a 108. Today I ate bacon, eggs, 2 toast with a small amount of jelly and milk and got a 135. Today's meal was about 70 carbs and I got a 135. Still not over, but close and it shows that even though I ate 23 less carbs, it went much higher. So it shows that certain food combos will affect your body differently. It's possible that you are only slightly glucose intolerant and not really diabetic, but for the sake of your baby and your body, it probably makes sense to test for at least a month before cutting back on checks. Also, carb out your meals and see how many you are really eating, there is a good chance that you're staying well within range and that's why your numbers are so good. I'm allowed 45-60 carbs at lunch and dinner and that's really a ton of carbs if you aren't plowing through a giant peice of chocolate cake or something.

  • Nope the nurse did not know by the 2nd hour.   My fasting was great, even on the low side.  My one hour was perfect.   BUT they pulled my blood 10 minutes early on hour 2 and 20 minutes early on hour 3.    My second and third hour test was over by a mere few points so I am certain had they taken my blood on time instead of early I would have passed.

I have 11 weeks left and my fluids are perfect and my LO is measuring right on track... perfect for his age.  I have not gained but a few pounds so far.   I have absolutely no symptoms what so ever for GD  and yes I do know that you do not always have symptoms.
