Does anyone's kid not display clear hunger cues?

I swear my little guy does not. When he's sleepy he yawns, when he has to be burped he sticks his tongue out repeatedly and/or won't take the paci if offered, if he is overtired he sucks on his fist, but hungry I just dont see. Yesterday he ate at 10:30 am, then napped on me from 113:15. From 1 until he woke up at 3:15 I watched his every move nonmoves really. At about 2:15 he moved his left hand across his mouth a few times so I was like ahha, that must be it. Then nothing else until he woke up crying at 3:15. No rooting, no hands by mouth, nothing. Is it possible that his hunger cue could come an hour before the crying or that he just doesn't have any hunger cues? He is 6 weeks old and was 10.5 lbs at his 1 month appt and gives a 56hour stretch at night so I don't think it's that he's too little and not waking when hungry. Any opinions?

  • Mine showed little cues at that age. Pretty much I knew he was hungry because he was due to be fed. He'd root, but rarely on anything but the boob. His cry was a little different for food though.

  • Mine doesn't anymore. He used to root when he was really little but now after 7 1/2 weeks he doesn't really show any cues except crying when it's too late. I usually offer it when it's about time. He doesn't comfort nurse so he'll pull off and refuse it if he's not hungry. He was about 12 pounds at his 5 week appt.

  • Alice only really rooted a bit, and shoved her hands in her mouth.  Now that she's teething and EVERYTHING goes in her mouth, I'm kinda screwed. LOL  If it gets close to the 4 hours she usually goes between bottles, I will go ahead and give her a bottle.  If it's not quite time yet, I will do the standard "check clothes for tags/hair, change diaper, offer paci" routine.  If none of that works, I will try a bottle.

  • DD didn't display any of the classic hunger cues as a newborn. I would just feed her every 3-4 hours and she never seemed hungry in between bottles. I don't know if that was just the way she was though or if it was because we had a lot of feeding issues including allergies and extreme reflux.
