Should I buy a couple of preemie sleepers?

Yesterday my OB told me that even if I carried these babies until 37-38 weeks, they would probably be no more than 6.5 lbs each.  Right now, I'm 32 weeks and at my growth scan at 31 weeks they were measuring at 4 lbs. 5 oz and 4 lbs 1 oz.

My singleton was nine pounds and I remember her swimming in the newborn clothes when we left the hospital.

Is it worth investing in 2-4 preemie sleepers?

Re: Should I buy a couple of preemie sleepers?

  • My daughter was 6.2 when she was born and wore preemie clothes for 2 weeks or so. I'd say yes and save the receipt in case you need to return them.

  • Mine were 5'5 and 5'9 and we just used NB stuff with no problem....that said I did have preemie stuff. It may be worth joining your local twins group and seeing if anyone has some you could borrow!

  • Mine were 5.3 and 5.13 when they came home.  We stopped using preemie size at that point since the sleepers were getting to short on them.  Gerber and Carter's NB size run smaller than some brands.  Some stuff was a little big on them but they were swaddled in blankets at home for the most part so it didn't really matter.  You could buy a couple but keep the tags on just in case.
  • My boys were swimming in newborn clothes at 6.9 and 6.12, but I found the Zutano brand at Target runs a little smaller than regular newborn, so those fit perfect!

  • My boys were 6.3 and 6.7 at 28 weeks, so we ran to Walmart and got a couple of the walmart brand fleece preemie sleepers and they were perfect for about two weeks until they fit into NB well.

  • My girls were born at 6.13 and 6.9 and came home both at 6.1. They wore a preemie outfit home and that was the last time they fit into preemie. They were just too long.

  • I say buy a couple from the sale rack. Our boys were born at 37 weeks and weighed 6lbs 7 oz & 6 lbs 6 oz. NB clothes were too big for at least a couple weeks.

Lost our first little peanut on 1/17/2012 at 9 weeks and 5 days. We miss you little blessing, but we know you were too perfect for this world.

  • We had preemie onesies, but didn't use them for very long. Maybe a couple days. We just had them in onesies and their Halo sleep sacks or swaddled in blankets. It was warmer then, so that made a difference.

NB sized stuff was great after about a week for us. (6-14 and 5-4 babies)

  • My girls were 4.13 and 6.2 and we used preemie clothes for several weeks, obvs. a little longer for my peanut. I had NO clothes that fit them (even though I was warned, I really didn't think they'd be that small) and my mom and MIL were able to pick stuff up at Kmart, Walmart and CL.

If you have someone who is able to run out and pick up a few preemie outfits after they are born, I'd wait. It's so hard to predict.

  • Like Kiwi, we just had my mom and sister run to Walmart and pick up some stuff.  They were 4.10 and 5.1 at birth and fit in preemie clothes for about a month.  The NICU had some clothes and the day they were born my family went shopping, washed the clothes, and brought them to us.

  • My boys were both under 6lbs, but they were also born at over 20" (at 37 weeks) - they were thin enough for preemie clothes, but they couldn't extend their legs all the way in them. I was glad I'd only picked up two preemie sleepers. If you're going to get preemie stuff, go for just a couple of really cheap sleepers from a department store, not any fancy stuff.

  • If you do, leave the tags on them so you can return them if not used. My guys were under 6 lbs, yet too long to fit in p sized clothes.

  • My girls were born at 38w1d. They were 6lb5oz and 6lb3oz when they came home, but both were 19" long. They lost another half pound in the first week (we were displaced by Sandy for a while), but they were still too long for preemie stuff.

If you're really going to need them, you can have someone pick you up a few things while you're in the hospital. They wore the kimono style tshirts and diapers while there; our hospital discouraged anything other than what they supplied, including hats!

  • I did not. My girls were 6.0 and 5.9. 19" long each. The newborn sleepers were a tiny bit big but not so big I felt like I should have had preemie clothes. At 10 weeks they moved up to 3 month sizes now.

  • My girls were 5lbs14oz and 4lbs12oz at birth and I did have just a couple preemie sleepers for them (one set for them to come home in).   What I wound up doing a lot in the first few weeks was just using 0-3 month gowns on them.  They were a little big, but I'd just roll up the sleeves and they worked great.  We weren't going anywhere so the gowns made for easy diaper changes which is really helpful since you're doing everything times two!

  • I had a few preemie things but never used them.  Even though the boys were only 5lb 9oz and 4lb 12oz they were too long for the preemie stuff.  I agree, keep the tags on anything in case you don't end up needing it!

  • My boys were 7.3 & 7.9 at 37w1d. I had 2 preemie outfits they wore from the hosp and 2 sleepers. I had a few more that I left the tags on and returned.

  • I loved the under 7 lb line from the gap for the first couple of weeks (smaller running NB stuff was ok too). It is soft cotton, small and actually a bit stretchy & they wore it past 7 lbs too.
  • My boys were each 4lb 10oz and preemie clothes fit them for maybe a week. I wouldn't buy any. We used the NICUs preemie clothes and brought our own NB. They were swimming in NB, but preemie was too short after that first week.
