The little, less serious version of West Nile Virus, caused by the same virus. Ethie fought off the more serious infection of west nile virus, but apparently fighting something like that will make your White Blood Cells go crazy.
The infectious disease guy was surprised to say the least. Now we have to report to the Public Health Department. We are going to monitor Ethie weekly but he should be FINE!!!
I am weeping with releif and gratitude that it's not something more serious. Thanks to all for their good wishes.
Re: Ethie News: West Nile Fever
yeah, Brahim! that is great news.
does that mean he got bit by a mosquito?
I want to cry myself. I am so happy it is not something worse!
Awww ((((hugs)))) I must have missed the original post, but I'm so glad he'll be ok! What a scary thing to have happen, and really something so unexpected. Now I wish I could hug him too!
Bloggin' It
wow!! so glad it wasn't something more serious, but crazy that it was west nile.
i'm so relieved for you guys!
Geesh, my kid is such a freak...Erb's Palsy and West Nile Fever...what's next? Horns and a tail?
Ethie is a medical marvel he gets all the weird stuff. God I'm in for it with this one.
(can you tell I'm so releived? I can't even tell you what it's like contemplating your baby having cancer. I coudln't write that out before, but it was awful. Not that west nile is particularly "good" but it's a heck of a lot better than leukemia)
Thank God (or all deities of choice, of course!). I'm so glad it was nothing life-threatening or any more serious.
What are the odds of a baby contacting WNV? I bet your boy is one in a million!
i'm glad he's doing better and it's nothing too serious!
He did get it from a mosquito. Almost certainly. We live in a woodsy area and I brushed mosquitos off him a few times. I am a magnet for mosquitos, and DD and DH never get bit. He must be more like me. The health department tracks all cases of West Nile infections they detect (there are three versions, the most serious being west nile virus, the west nile fever, then asymptomatic infection) The majority of the infections are asymptomatic and it's unknown how many people in the general population are infected. The pedi is mandated to report Ethie's infection to the Health Department and I think they'll come and talk to me and check out or house and yard.
Most people can fight it off and don't get sick. Ethie was sick a week or so ago and had a rash...possibly his fever but the pedi said he could have been infected and symptomatic in August or September. We've had a frost and most of the mosquitos are gone, but it wasn't until mid October and there is an incubation period. So I don't know when he got bit. He hasn't been acting "sick" these last few days, so the only marker we had was the high WBC count. I don't know if this has anythign to do w/ his sleep. Pedi said it might be possible that his body was fighting the virus and coudn't let him sleep but it sounds like she has no idea on that...
West Nile Virus, how random! Thank goodness that's all it was and he'll be fine.
YAY!!! That's SUCH great news Brahim! I'm so glad that it wasn't something more serious
