How have I only lost 7 pounds?

I gave birth a week ago and I weighed myself for the first time this morning. How have I only lost 7 pounds? My baby weighed 5.14.  Did I have no placenta?  All these websites that say you can lose up to 12-18 pounds in the first week because of fluid loss etc are a bunch of liars! I only gained 28 pounds during the pregnancy and I'm BFing.

End of rant.

Re: How have I only lost 7 pounds?

  • My baby is still inside, but I'd be ranting, too. Sounds like you didn't gain much at all. I guess every body is different... Also, the internet lies sometimes. lol. Good luck, mama! It's only been a week ;)

  • With dd, from fluid retention, I gained 1020 lbs the first two weeks. In a week or two you will probably start losing it. I don't think I lost any weight this time the first week.
  • You are very brave! No way am I weighing yet! Don't forget about all the fluids you probably had in the hospital -- my feet are still twice their normal size from IV fluids.  And of course, you are nursing.  Nursing in my experience does not equal dropped weight...more like a ten lb weight gain, again from fluids, increased breast tissues.  I don't know about you, but I'm starving when I nurse too and end up eating granola bars by the case.  It takes time!  I don't know anyone in real life who ever popped right back into their prematernity clothes right away.

  • It's fluid, I promise. It takes at least 2 weeks to drop the water weight especially if you had an IV during labor.
  • I agree it is probably a lot of fluid. Don't stress!!
