  • Could maybe be a cute NN if there was a more feminine full name...but I can't think of a girls' name that Toby would be a NN for.

  • DH and I were thisclose to naming DD Tobi Lynn!  I love it on a girl - it is one of the very few boy names I like on girls.

We got it from one of our favorite singers, Tobi Lightman.  Totally a GP name for me but was almost a reality!

  • Oh. My. Gracious. No.
  • Thanks for the opinions! I love it but not sure I could use it! Not even sure I'll have another baby to name. It just keeps my mind off things! Keep you're opinions coming!

  • If I heard Toby I would definitely think male. To me it's in the same category as Frank or Bob, very masculine.

  • I have an Aunt Toby... It suits her well, but not something I would name my own little girl.

This. I LOVE the name Toby (thanks West Wing) and I'm not opposed to boy names on girls (I've always like Ryan and Skyler), but... Toby does seem a little awkward. I don't know.

  • I really dislike it. I'd still hate it as a nickname for a feminine first name, but it would be almost acceptable.

  • I wouldn't mind it as a boyish nickname for a feminine first (along the lines of Charlie or Frankie), but I'm not crazy about it as a formal first name.

I don't know if this is something that would matter to you or not (it's not a big deal to me), but Toby is wildly popular as a dog's name right now. (One of my dogs has this name and there are always several Tobys at the dog park any time we go.)

Yes. It is bad. I think of Toby as a (male) dog or a fat kid...and now I feel bad.

Is Toby a nickname for something though? OP, maybe you could use Toby as a nn?

It's not the worst thing I have ever heard.

I agree.  It's not the worst, but I definitely wouldn't choose it for a girl.

  • Very bad

  • Bad. Especially with Ryann. Not judging her name, totally get why you used it but I think if you have another girl and use a boy name (I say Ryan is unisex) then I could see people side eyeing it. But if that doesn't bother you...

  • Toby is a masculine name. Not for girls.
TTC since 2004, Ectopic 2005, lost right tube. Multiple miscarriages. Baby girl born June 2013.
  • Eh, it's not that bad.  But I def think it would be better as a nn (I personally love feminine fns that have masculine nns.. Francesca/Frankie, Alexandra/Alex, and my DD Johanna/Jo)... just not sure what the full first name would be to make Toby a nickname!

ETA: Thinking on this for a minute more, I actually like Toby more as a nn for a girl than I do as a fn for a boy!
