Babies: 9 - 12 Months

MOTN Separation Anxiety or..?

Hi ladies!

I haven't yet posted on the 9-12 month board, but my son is 9 months old as of a few days ago - and I figured you all might have more experience with this!

So, for the past week or so my son has been waking up, screaming in his crib. We did the Sleep Easy method about a month and a half ago, and he had been sleeping amazingly well. Before all of this waking up, he would generally wake around 3 am and eat (he is genuinely hungry at that point) but that was it until 5-5:30 am. (his bed time is 7 pm)

When he wakes up I wait about 10-15 minutes and watch him on the monitor. He is standing (which he rarely did in the motn before) and yelling/screaming - to me, it's not a painful or hysterical cry - so I really doubt it's gas or anything like that (he's breastfed and has 2 solid meals plus snacks per day) But it's just like he's screaming at us to wake up - so eventually, I do get up and he will eat.. which is more of a comfort feeding, I think - and then he goes back down. But then 2-3 hours later, he's up doing the same thing.

What happened?! Sleep regression? Separation anxiety? I miss that extra sleep already, because he was a terrible sleeper before :(  I just hope this doesn't ruin all of our hard work with the sleep training.. or we'll be back at square one. Sigh.

What do you think? Experience/advice?  TIA!

Re: MOTN Separation Anxiety or..?

  • Is he "stuck" in the standing position and is screaming to get help out of it?

  • No, because he'll lay back down, get frustrated, and then stand back up.. It's weird! Unless it's a growth spurt or something? Well, I know something's up for sure - you just never know what "it" is with babies! Oh well, this too shall pass.. :)
  • I can't be of any help, but I thought you might like to know that I've been going through the same thing with my daughter, who'se almost 11 months old.  She's been doing it for some time now, and I have resorted to just taking her into bed with me, which is somethign I was always opposed to but finally got so tired that I felt I had no other choice.  Now she won't sleep past midnight unless it's in bed with me.  I'm afraid we're going to have to CIO, which I don't know if I'm strong enough to do.  Anyway, I too would like some insight from the group!
