Babies: 9 - 12 Months

ASQ test: Gross Motor skill "issue"?

I was just wondering if anyone else encountered this at their 9 month appointment.

DD was 100% fine on every category except Gross Motor Skills

I had to mark "no" for the following items:?

  1. While holding onto furniture, does your baby bend down and pick up a toy from the floor and then return to a standing position?

  2. While holding onto furniture, does your baby lower himself with control (without falling or flopping down)?

  3. Does your baby walk beside furniture while holding on with only one hand?

Those items seem pretty advanced to me for a 9 month old?  Are your 9 month olds doing all those things.

Granted, the Ped said she wasn't concerned, but I am more curious to know if other 9 month olds are really doing all of this.  DD is 22 pounds, and I am not sure if that matters either.

Re: ASQ test: Gross Motor skill "issue"?

  • My guy is 12 months now, but I don't remember my pedi asking these kind of specifics at his 9 month appt.  I can guarantee you he was not doing this at 9 months.  I think he started walking along furniture and pulling up around 10.5-11 months.  I dont think you need to worry at all.

  • You probably don't need to worry.

I will say that my 9m LO is doing the first 2 and has been for some time. But he's the only one in his DC class that is.

  • My son is 10 months old and still isn't pulling himself up to standing, let alone walking while holding on to furniture.  There are some babies who are doing those things at 9 months, so they must include those questions just to capture that information.  I wouldn't interpret the questions as things your baby "should" be doing.  No worries!
  • My lo is ten months and can do these things, but at nine months, I would've answered no to two of the three. I wouldn't worry at all. Kids all do things in their own time. Seems like some are more verbal than mobile or vice versa. I hate those stupid questionnaires, all they do is worry moms.

  • The asq is not an exact science. I used them at my last job. I hardly ever had a kiddo doing everything perfect. It just lets you get a better idea of what are your babies strengths are and where they might be a little weaker. It's a good tool but every baby develops differently. If baby was having issues in all categories that would be more concerning,

My little girl is just staring these things and she is about 10 months now.

  • I don't think it matters at all becauuse I have known a lot of babies that were not doing any of these things at 9 months.

However, since you asked. DD is 9 months this week and does #1 very well. #2 she does about 50% of the time, the other 50% she still flops or falls. #3 she does not do. She still holds onto furniture with both hands while she walks along side it. She only started cruising the furniture this past week.

  • My kid would have failed that test at 9 months. He just started learning how to "fall down" at almost 10 months. He just started pulling himself up recently, and didn't even crawl until 10.5 months. He had strengths in language and fine motor, so his pedi wasn't surprised that he was "behind" with gross motor. Some kids can only learn so many things at one time!

That describes DD perfectly.  She was a "yes" for everything on Fine Motor and Problem Solving and is really doing well with language as well.

  • My LO has been doing all of that since 7 months . Shortly after she started crawling she was pulling up. She's a small girl though so its easier for her.

  • We just had our appointment today. We got asked those same questions.  The only one that DD can do is #2, and that is because the furniture that she climbs on is low to the ground.

DD is also 22 pounds haha.  I don't think that matters, I just think that babies learn at different rates.  Her cousin just turned 1 and didn't start any of that until 11 months.  We just went to a play group and a 9 month old was walking around unassisted.

  • DD scored "borderline."  She is doing none of those things but many babies that age can.  We are not worried about it nor is the pedi.  She'll get it.
  • I would have been able to answer "yes" for DS on that test (at 9m), but not for DD at that age. She didn't start pulling up until 10m, and wasn't cruising until a month or so after that.

  • My LO started doing all those things (bending down to pick things up and returning to standing, etc) between 8 and 8.5 months.  But that seems pretty early to me.  Two of my friends have babies that are 8 and 9 months that don't even sit up longer than 10 seconds yet, let alone crawl or cruise.
