When do you start using a nursing cover?

I am breastfeeding and my goal is to make it through baby's first year.

We've been doing well learning at home, but I was wondering when is it a good idea to start "training" your baby to nurse under a cover? I'd like to get to a point (soon) when I don't have to exit the room to nurse and I am not comfortable with the idea of anyone but DH and my mom seeing me nurse without covering up.

TIA

Re: When do you start using a nursing cover?

  • I actually used one for the first time today with my dad and sister visiting. My little guy is only 3 days old. I wasn't aware you needed to train them! It took me a little trial and error but I think it will get easier with practice. Good luck!

  • Nursing didn't work out with my older one, but my younger one nursed for 16 months. For us, I found that wearing the right clothing (including always wearing a nursing tank instead of bra) ended up being far more discreet than a cover. She would push the cover away, cry under it, get distracted and play with it instead of eating, and not latch if she couldn't see me. It drew attention to what we were doing in a way that quickly getting her latched and making sure there was no skin visible did not.

  • I tried and failed a couple of times already...of course, I am a month in, and still have to take most of my shirt off. Big chest + squirmy baby=hard work!

  • I started using a cover right away bc my MIL was in town and I am also not big on anyone seeing the goods except my husband and my mom. My daughter is so excited to eat she doesn't even notice. I have also fed under a blanket in the ped's waiting room, but the cover is way easier.
  • I just use a cover when I need one. I don't excuse myself or ask anyone to leave when she needs to nurse. I nursed her under a cover in the hospital when I had visitors.

  • My DS is 11 days now and we have nurse covered up twice now with company. My only issue is no matter how I strip him down, he falls asleep from the warmth. So it ends up being a cluster feed session. It took me 1 1/2 hours to feed him a "regular serving" because he was passing out so much when my friend was over. I just duck my head under the receiving blanket with him while I hook him up. It kinda feels silly.

  • I had to use one the other day when DS got hungry at the pediatrician's office for the first checkup. Luckily, we were having a consult with the lactation consultant, so I got some good tips.
