ezcema mommas

My daughter has this on her wrist, ankles and back of the knees mostly. My question is this. What do you do in the summer? Right now I keep her ankles moisturized and socks on so she can't scratch. Anytime those socks come off she immediately starts scratching. Obviously I can't keep socks on all summer. What do you suggest?

BTW we use hydrocortisone when it gets really bad but that doesn't seem to stop the itching.

  • I do a hydrocortisone moisturizer mix. Our pedi prescribes it. You could easily mix it yourself.  It helps keep his skin from drying out from the hydrocortisone. Also, I find the eczema on my 3 year old is much better in the summer.

  • Try putting Aquaphor on at night and then putting socks/pajamas over it, too. Definitely be careful about all soaps and detergents that come into contact with your daughter, including things that you use. I have pretty bad eczema and anything with fragrance in it makes it way worse.

  • My DD's eczema got worse during the summer. Anytime she would sweat it would flare up really bad. The best I could do was if we were outside, I'd bring her in and wipe her with a wash cloth, and then cover her in lotion. It didn't knock it totally out but it helped. I wish I had the answer, but it's a battle.

  • My DS also has eczema on his knees/ankle/elbow/cheeks. We use hydrocortisone cream, then out vaseline over it at night. I also use a little bit of vaseline during the day. I also have eczema (to the point where the backs of my hands crack and bleed in the winter). I wind up sleeping with an ultra-moisturizing lotion, then vaseline over it, then with fuzzy "spa" gloves on EVERY single night. Have hope though, because most eczema sufferers get MUCH better in the summer. Sunlight exposure, saltwater exposure and even chlorine actually seem to help my eczema. My dermatologist actually "prescribed" sunlight exposure (of course, with sunscreen) one summer, because mine was a tad out of control. It works! If DS's gets worse by the time the weather gets a little warmer, I'm definitely keeping a little more outdoors time in mind.

  • DS has it bad. We took him to a dermatologist because the pedi just wasn't giving us anything that worked. The derm gave us a prescription for Desonide lotion 0.05%. It's a steroid lotion with very little steroid in it. It has helped clear everything up completely and now we just put lotion on at night. Our routine used to be prescription, then Clinique body butter then pj's. Only bathing every three or four days. The clinique is a little expensive but we were willing to try anything after nothing worked. We tried aquaphor, cetaphil, vasaline creamy lotion and a few others I can't remember. Good luck! Maybe take LO to a dermatologist since they specialize in skin care.
