Cloth Diapering

Resale value on Alva or Kawaii?

Just curious what the resale value is on these less expensive diapers. Would 40 to 50 percent of cost be reasonable? What about bamboo inserts?

I'm trying to justify buying some more bamboo and/or blend inserts. I figure they're definitely worth it if I can get back part of the cost later. Plus eventually I'll have some newborn diapers to sell.

Re: Resale value on Alva or Kawaii?

  • Resale online tends to be nothing because it's not worth the shipping cost. If I sell you an Alva for $2, but it costs $2 to mail it... you'd rather buy a new one, right? They have some value locally, but not much. I just plan to wear mine out.

Inserts would be sort of the same deal. They last longer in good condition, though (especially bamboo), and there is probably more of a market for them because they'll work with any pocket.

  • I had some Kawaiis (a couple different types, all with snaps) that I sold for $7 each. When I averaged out the ones I paid for with the ones I got for free they cost me about $8 each, so I didn't think it was a bad resale price at all.

I sold them at my local CD store's consignment weekend, and the owner was really surprised they sold for that much though.

  • I don't have any to sell yet, just thinking ahead. I wouldn't even try to sell individual diapers. I don't think that would be worth it. But I was thinking something like 10 Kawaii P&N for $40+shipping or 10 Alva newborns for $25+shipping. Or $10+shipping for 10 bamboo inserts. I can't imagine the shipping costing more than $2 for the inserts, and I could do a flat rate shipping box for the diapers.

I've seen BG 4.0s listed for $14/diaper, which is crazy to me since I bought mine on sale for less than $15/diaper.

Shipping on your inserts would likely be closer to 5 as they would be cheaper to ship in a flat rate envelope. And BG hold their value more, Alvas do not.

  • What people list is not really the same as what sells. I see ridiculous listings for things - like carriers for more than they cost new (and not htf, like Infantino). Most diapers will depreciate a few bucks... in the case of a $6 diaper, that just means I won't be bothering to ship it.

Some people pay more just bc of the convenience factor. Take a look on diaperswappers or the FB pages

People are crazy! I was browsing diaperswappers and found Alvas listed for $6/each, Kawaii P&N listed for $6/each (when they are $6.25 directly from Kawaii)... Thanks for the ideas. If I can resell for half that, it totally justifies me buying more inserts. :)

  • I will probably donate/give away my diapers, do many were given to me I would like to pass them on to a serving family,
  • I mean "deserving" family.

the Kawaii Pure and Natural have a great resale value. Why? Because even though its only $6.25 from the website, shipping is expensive! Plus those diapers are always out of stock or have limited colors. As an avid BST-er, $6 for an EUC Kawaii pure and natural diaper is a great deal and would sell fast.

I bought mine in a 20 pack when they were doing the Thanksgiving sales. I never even looked at shipping costs. $12-15 for shipping is outrageous. I can see why the resale value is better.
