XP: A/S - Echogenic Focus

So we had our A/S today and it went mostly well.  Everything looked perfect except for an echogenic focus (white spot on baby's heart) which is a soft marker for chromosomal abnormalities.  Doctor didn't seem overly concerned, but is sending us for a level 2 ultrasound within the next couple weeks.  Anyone else had or heard of something similar to this?  I'm trying to be calm and not freak out, because the doctor didn't seem to think I needed to worry.  Of course, I would have preferred to hear that everything was perfect...  But baby wasn't overly cooperative in showing off the money shot, so while the tech could give us a guess (75%) on gender, we're also not confident on that.  Hopefully the next ultrasound will answer both those questions.  Sigh... more waiting...

Re: XP: A/S - Echogenic Focus

  • Lurking (accidentally actually) from the April board and thought I'd jump in cuz your post caught my eye. While my LO doesn't have an EIF, he/she does have a soft marker for Down Syndrome. In fact, my DS also had a soft marker (CP cysts on his brain) and he turned out perfectly fine. With that, I've done a lot of research on the topic of these soft markers and they are very controversial. I'm sure your dr. wasn't concerned because he/she sees them really often and it usually turns out just fine. I have a follow up Level 2 u/s on Monday for my LO's soft marker and am anxious to see how things are. If you do Google, you'll likely find that most cases turn out just fine. I'm sure you're LO was is perfectly healthy. GL!

  • I hope your LO gets a clean bill of health on your next ultrasound. From the research I've done, 1 soft marker generally isn't a huge cause for concern.

  • I hope your LO is okay!  I also have to go for a fetal echo cardiogram next week as well.  My doctor makes all IVF patients have them done as a precaution regardless of what the anatomy scan says.  I'll be praying for you!!

  • Thanks ladies.  I read up on it a little more, and I think I'm not too concerned since this is the ONLY marker they see, and all other measurements, my NT scan, and 2nd tri bloodwork were all normal.  Hopefully the next ultrasound will give me that final peace of mind.
