Update: Fed up w/constipation & DR

So, I read all of your wonderful comments regarding the formula issue and I told my husband that I would wait to call the DR on Monday just to see if she would finally come around and recommend a sensitive formula for LO.

I called this morning and was ticked off at the response. They told me to continue giving him the normal formula, plus his 3oz water, 2oz apple prune juice, and 1 tsp kyro syrup 3 times a day, PLUS they wanted me to start giving him 1/4 of a cap full of Miralax (an adult laxative) at least once or twice a day. WHAT!?! I am not giving my 3 month old adult laxative let alone on top of all the other stuff!

I told the nurse that returned my call that I wasn't comfortable giving him all of this stuff that something has to be wrong for me to have to be giving him all of these foreign things just to get him to poop! She told me that it is not uncommon for parents to have to take this course of action and that this is what the doctor recommends. URGH!!!

So, my husband and I found an organic baby prune concentrate that we are going to start in place of the syrup. We will continue to give him juice and water and I think I am just going to switch his formula anyway.

He has been on Similac Advance since birth. Do you ladies have any recommendation as to which formula I should start out with trying (I have sample cans of both Similac Sensitive and Enfamil Gentlease that I got in the mail)? Also, I heard that if you switch all at once that sometimes they an reject it. Should I mix half of his Advance with half of his new kind to start out with or is that a bad thing to do?

Thank you for all of your kind words and support!

  • I would say switch to the Similac sensitive. Just because its the same brand so I wouldn't think it would be THAT much different. Try half advanced and half sensitive for a day, then all sensitive from then on? And the organic juice cant hurt.

I EBF so I'm not an expert on formula.

  • I don't have any advice because I have no experience with formula, but I just wanted to pop in and say I am so sorry and that I am thinking about you and your LO. Hang in there momma and keep us updated on what you do and how LO is doing.

  • We switched L from Similac Advance to Similac Sensitive. He did fine with the switch. I would not mix the formulas, though. That will make it harder for you to know if it is working or not.

  • We switched from Similac Advance to Similac Sensitive, no mixing of the two just a cold hard switch. He did fine. We did it for reflux reasons but he farts so much more now on the Sensitive. I call him Tooter. Hope your LO gets some relief. I don't know what your pedis problem is. Switching formula sounds way less complicates than all the stuff you're doing now.

  • Wow. Thatks nuts. My nephew dealt with this mess. Their pedi advised the miralax, but said to do like 1/4 tsp in one bottle each day and without all of the other stuff. He did fine like that until they started solids and juice at 6ish months. Then they were able to regulate him with diet.

  • Wow! Thats crazy that your dr would want you to give your LO all kinds of stuff rather than just try a different formula. I hope your LO gets some relief when you switch.
If I'm not mistaken, the sensitive kind should be the same it's just that some particles are already broken down so it's easily digested. I can't imagine why your dr wouldn't suggest to try sensitive.
I feed my dd enfamil. For the first 3 weeks I bf then we switched to all formula. I automatically started her on the gentlease for a week then moved to infant and she did find. I also used gas drops. I'm not sure if they help you to poop but they help to pass gas so maybe.
Also IMO I would look for a new dr. Good luck!

    I'd try a new Dr...and similac sensitive..

1 on the new Dr.... Nothing is more frustrating than a Dr who won't listen to patients' opinions.

  • I would be switching doctors ASAP!

I would also stay in the same brand first to see if that works before trying a different brand.

We use gentlease and give one ounce of water per month of age of water per day, although lately she hasn't had the water and has been doing fine without it.

  • As above PP said...I would be finding a new Ped ASAP as well.

P was on Similac Advance we switched to the sensitive and he does fine. Don't mix the two. No need to
  • Uhm, you need a new dr, ASAP.

LO1 is 17m and has never had juice! Why on earth would you want to give an infant so many different things when a formula switch could help the poop! ahhh. LO1 was on enfamil newborn.
