Damn You Charlie!

I know, I know the books warn you about it and so do your friends but there is nothing that could have prepared me for my first pregnancy Charlie Horse! Last night I woke up screaming from the horrible pain in my left calf. My husband woke up concerned there was something wrong with the baby and I could hardly get the words out to say I had a Charlie Horse. This was no regular spasm though...it made any other one I've gotten before seem like a joke. I got 3 backtoback last night and thankfully my DH massaged all of them out.
I'm not looking forward to getting more of these in the middle of the night, or anytime for that matter. I've heard that more water during the day helps, bananas and use of the body pillow. I'd love to hear from you...am I a big baby or has this happened to anyone else??

Re: Damn You Charlie!

  • I haven't had one this pregnancy yet but I have felt them coming so I quickly pull my foot up and stretch that muscle and it goes away. Last pregnancy I got one so bad at someone else's house while spending the night. My girlfriend and I were sharing a bed and I had to wake her up because I didn't know what to do!!!! I was in tears! Writhing in pain. After the Charlie horse finally subsided my muscle was really sore like I had just done an extreme work out...

  • I had one the night before last. I was laying on the couch and went to stretch and had a horrible pain in my left calf. I was on the phone with my Fiance at the time and just said..call you back, cramp! It was terrible. I still have soreness in that leg.
  • Bananas. I am allergic so I try to stay hydrated. The hurt. Good luck

  • I used to get them when I was younger, so I knew what to do.

This may sound weird, but I naturally point my toes in bed. I had to train myself to sleep with them more flexed, and that usually kept the leg cramps away.

  • Thank you Everyone!

  • Huh...I somehow missed that Charlie horses are a symptom of pregnancy in all the reading I've done.  I haven't had one in several years.  Not looking forward to having one again.

Yes, apparently as you end your 2nd tri and begin your third some woman are prone to them.  I'm hoping this doesn't become a regular thing for me.
