Where will baby sleep for the first few months? — The Bump
March 2013 Moms

Where will baby sleep for the first few months?

Just wondering what everyone else is doing with this.  Will your baby be in the nursery right away, or in your room with you?  If the latter, will s/he be in a bassinet, crib, co-sleeper? If a bassinet, will it be a pack and play type bassinet, or a dedicated bassinet? Does it have mesh sides, and if not, are you concerned about the soft sides posing the same risks as bumpers? We can't decide what to do, and keep going back and forth between a bassinet and just setting the crib up in our master at first.  Thought it would be interesting to hear what everyone else is doing. :)

Re: Where will baby sleep for the first few months?

  • Well for us - our baby will be in the room with us for the first few months. We are planning on having a Graco Pack 'n Play Playyard or a Fisher-Price Newborn Rock 'n Play sleeper.

This. We got a Graco PNP and a FP Newborn RNP sleeper. One will go upstairs and one downstairs, but I haven't decided which way we're going to do it yet.

  • We do have his crib set up in the nursery but he will be in the room with us for at least the first month. We have a pack and play set up. It has mesh sides.

  • Like our other 5 kids, she will sleep in my bed with Dh and I until we transition her to her "big girl bed," probably by her 2nd birthday.

  • We got a cosleeper has mesh sides, a drop down side to have him close, and it latches to our bed. But we intend to have Lo nap in his crib during the day since its closer to the Living room and had the monitor set up in there. It will also create some comfort ad a connection to the crib. Keep in mind our house is quiet small so babies room is very close to the everything.
  • We are thinking on using our pack n play for the first few weeks than move her into her crib. We'll see how it goes but for now that's what we are thinking.

  • LO nursery is next to the guest bedroom. He is immediately going to start sleeping in his crib. And DH and I will be sleeping in the guest bedroom.

  • We will have him sleep in the Pack N' Play in our room for the first couple of months.  Hopefully we'll transition him to his crib at around 6-8 weeks.

  • We will have a PNP with a bassinet set up in our bedroom for LO to sleep in for however long we feel comfortable.

We're not sure what we plan to do afterward though. We don't have a nursery because SKs have their own rooms. If LO sleeps throughout the night after approximately 4 months, we may move him into a crib in SD's bedroom. However, we're in the middle of court proceedings to get custody of SD (who has temporarily been living with us for the last 7 months). If we do not get custody, then we may turn her room into a nursery. Or we may move into a bigger home this summer as we are currently renting a townhouse. It's all up in the air. But for now, we're going with a PNP.

We considered purchasing a second-hand bassinet from my cousin but decided that it wasn't worth it for the length of time that LO would use it. We preferred to purchase a PNP that we can use for a longer period of time.

  • First time mom here but i decided on a pack n play with a bassinet an ill have it pushed to the side of my bed..they are same height.
  • We have a really beautiful, albeit vey impractical, bassinet that was a hand me down from a friend. DD will sleep in that next to me in our bedroom until she outgrows it. Then she will likely move to her crib in her room. I hadn't actually thought about the sides of the bassinet being a hazard. Will have to noodle that one over!

  • DD will sleep in her room, in her crib from day one.

  • We have a PnP with a bassinet and a RnP Sleeper. A friend also offered to let us borrow her bassinet. I guess we'll use whichever one works the best! Either way she'll probably be in our room for the first 2 or 3 months before moving to her crib. Unless she decides to start sleeping through the night before then, but I'm not counting on it!

  • We have a large cradle that my dad made for me and my sister when we were babies. We'll have this in our bedroom for a couple months. We also have a PnP in our living room for occasional naps when I'm downstairs.
  • DD#1 slept in an Arms Reach Cosleeper in our room for the first 5 months. We'll do the same with DD#2. I expect she'll be in the cosleeper for 4-6 months.

  • With DS he didn't sleep in his crib which was in his room for about 6 months.  I had a newborn napper he slept in and then i co-slept b/c getting up for feeding all night and getting up for work in the am was over the top hard!!!  Everyone does what feels comfortable for them and baby.

  • We always have the baby in his crib.  The first few months the crib will be in our room and then we will move it to his own room.
  • Planning on using a bassinet in our room at first, then transition into crib.

    This  for us too. :-)

  • Co-sleeper and/or in bed with us for the first couple of months. Then she'll move to the crib which is in our room and will be in there until she's around 2 or so. DS was a really independent sleeper but DD is still in bed with us a lot so we're just kind of planning on co-sleeping and bed sharing for a while.

  • In our room like my daughter did in a traditional bassinet, probably for the first 2 months or so. We also have a new rock and play sleeper should he need the incline.

  • I will be cosleeping for a year. I have a crib, real bassinet, and rock n play. Will use bassinet and RNP until she can roll then we will switch to crib. The fabric sides of bassinet won't pose a SIDS risk until she can roll.

  • I don't believe in bedsharing over a long period of time (especially after seeing a couple of three-year-old still sharing their parents' beds) so we will have LO in his PNP, less than a foot away from me. The sides are all mesh, there's a changing station attached to it and it will make it easier for me to nurse him at night.

However, we also plan on having him day-nap in his own crib, in the nursery with the monitor on.

I'm not sure how long we will make it with him in our room... SO and I were very independant babies who slept better on our own, in our cribs, with whatever noise was in the house at night. No need for a fan or a noise machine, just the sound of life going on around us. Hopefully our son is the same way. We sure will go with his personality when it comes to deciding when and where he should sleep on his own...

  • We have the pack and play set up in our room right now.  The plan is to LO one there for a couple of weeks and then move them to crib.  It has mesh sides.  Once we get all the bedding ordered and washed (waiting for LO to be born so we know gender), then we will move them to the crib.
  • Well our room is technically the baby's room since we don't have a space for an actual nursery. So we have his crib set up in a little corner. I wanted to co-sleep, but DH isn't having that. lol
