infant travel

We are planning a fall trip across country. Dh and I want to take the baby and we will have my in laws for probably 3 nights and 3 nights just us. We have a rental house in mind so it should be pretty similar to home. Would you go at the end of the 12 week maternity leave? Or later in October when baby is a little over 5 months? We would be flying 5 hrs and some car rides and going to parks. Not a ton of sightseeing just relaxing mostly. Any travel advice?

Re: infant travel

  • Do the earlier option. Traveling only gets harder as babies get older.

We did a 4.5 hour road trip to go camping when DD was 10 weeks. Then a 6 hour road trip when she was 3.5m. Then an even bigger road trip; 7 hours to one destination, then four to another, then five home; when she was 6m.

The 6m trip was harder than the other two. She was on more of a schedule then and sleeping less. The first two trips were easy peasy, all we had to do was remember to feed her and she pretty much slept otherwise.

  • The earlier option, for sure. At just over 5 months, my daughter was just learning to crawl and did not want to sit still on our international flight. But a 5 hour train ride with her at 3 months was a breeze!

This. I had a similar experience. It then became impossible with a toddler but that's a tale for another day.

  • Earlier will be easier, but both should be fine, I found it got really hard after DD could walk.
