Good NOVELS about pregnancy and motherhood?

I'm tired of reading "What to Expect When..." or "Your Pregnancy Week by Week" or "Happiest Baby on the Block"...

Any suggestions for good NOVELS or even biographies about pregnancy, motherhood, or the journey to motherhood (including IVF and adoption, if you have good suggestions)... I read that Shopoholic one, but I want something more serious but also more fun than the how to books.

I know everyone suggests belly laughs, but I think I want a novel.  :)

Anyone?  I'm snowed in and bored....

  • I don't know if this is what you are looking for, but I remember reading this book and thinking "I'd love to re-read this book when I'm pregnant/after having a baby".

It's actually historical fiction about the only daughter of Jacob (he of the 12 sons in the Bible). It's a novel about ancient womanhood and growing up from being a young girl and going through puberty, to being pregnant, to having a calling to become a midwife, etc. It's one of my favorite books. It might not be up your alley, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

  • This is kind of chick lit but I really enjoyed it and would read it again, "Little Earthquakes" by Jennifer Weiner.

"From prenatal yoga to postbirth sex, "Little Earthquakes" is a frank, funny, fiercely perceptive take on the comedies and tragedies of love and marriage"- Goodreads.

  • I read Belly Laughs by Jenny McCarthy when I was pregnant. It was funny and entertaining. I know you said that was suggested, I'm just seconding the rec if you haven't already read it.

I LOVE this book and I own it... I hadn't considered re-reading it, though, but that's a great idea... I read it in college, and I bet it would give me totally different insights now.  That's EXACTLY what I'm looking for... Thanks!
