PCOS, Clomid & Twins?

So i was diagnosed with a mild PCOS case two years ago and ever since been on & off on Glucophage (Metformin) which helped regulate my period. During the months when we were TTC, I regulated my Metformin intake (500 MG twice a day). Then my doctor advised me to try Clomid (50 MG) to accelerate the process and ensure ovulation.

I only did one round of 50, from 2nd d to 6th day, and got pregnant on the first round!

At 9 DPO my HCG level was 44, and at 11 DPO it was 151! It shows that its doubling every 29.5 hours and not 48. Now what i wanted to know are my chances in getting twins? Anyone share the same case? Im still at 4 weeks so a long way to know...

Re: PCOS, Clomid & Twins?

  • Your chances of twins should have been discussed by your RE before you took the Clomid. However, I get the feeling you didn't see an RE.

You can not base multiples on betas.  Period.  And why were you tested so early??

This.  Were you monitored at all?  If so, you'd know how many follicles were there and have a better idea.

yes. All of this. With my twin pregnancy my betas were low in the beginning and did not double in 48 hours. Proof that hcg cannot predict twins.

  • If you were monitored, you should have some kind of idea (how many follicles were there?). With my twin pregnancy (lost one twin at 13 weeks, DD is the surviving twin) my betas were very high and had a very fast doubling time. That being said, I know plenty of twin mamas who had low betas and slow doubling. It was only a clue to me because my twins were IVF/ICSI and we had put back 2 really good quality embryos. We knew there was a solid chance of twins. If you know you had more than one follicle on the Clomid, sure, then you might be looking at a twin pregnancy. But honestly, your beta looks very normal to me (good! but normal).

  • I was on Clomid with my last pregnancy and was pregnant with twins. I lost one at 9.5 weeks though.

I was also on Clomid with this pregnancy and am having a singleton.

  • I too conceived on clomid and the fertility doctor saw 2 mature follicles on the US before I ovulated meaning I would have 2 eggs that month and a small possibility of twins.   They confirmed only 1 baby in the US and my b-hCG at 14dpo was 344 and 20dpo was 3052.  Have your doctor confirm at the US whether its twins or a singleton.
