I signed up for my first race. My cousin, sister and SIL are all signed up with me! I'm so excited but super nervous about the length. Any tips from runners out there?
I did Bay to Breakers in San Francisco last year and it was awesome. I map quested the corse so as I was running I had an idea of where I was this helped me so much mentally. I also told myself I would walk the dreaded Hayes Hill, which gave me a "break" to look forward too. I carried my own water which helped but I found that I didn't fuel properly before the race and ran out of juice at about mile six. My longest training run was 6 miles and I thought that little extra to 12K wouldn't be a big deal but it was. I agree about getting fitted for shoes. Good luck and have fun!

If you're getting new shoes, make sure you wear them in before the race! And a common "rule" is that if you can run half the race distance 2 days in a row, (so 3.5 on sat, 3.5 on sun) then you can run the whole race. The addrenaline of the race will help you go the distance. Good Luck!

Re: 12k in May!
I found a running store and will be getting fit for a good pair of shoes. Good to know about the 300 miles. Thanks!
Good luck to you too, Henglish!
I ran (well probably 60 or 70%)/walked my first 5k last summer. I did much better than I thought I would. I didn't follow a specific training plan.
I wish I would have had better shoes. Mine weren't bad, but they weren't fitted for my feet.
