High-Risk Pregnancy

16 weeks GD diagnosis

Hi everyone, I am 16 weeks today and was just diagnosed.  I see the dietician on Monday.

I am no stranger to diet, I have been on WW for the last few months, and a similar program for years before that.  But I am nervous because this diet from what I have seen is much stricter.  In the last few weeks since failing my 3 hour GTT, I have done really well on WW, eating mostly healthy with a few goodies here and there when I have enough points.

But from the sounds of it, I need to be more strict and there is very little wiggle room for anything not healthy.  I try to eat healthy all week, and eat out on Friday's, which is usually not healthy food.  I look forward to this all week....am I safe in assuming this needs to stop?  Is one bad meal once a week still too much?

I think one of the things I am most nervous about is the days where I am really tired and don't get a lunch packed, or haven't made it to the grocery store.  When I have healthty food at my disposal, it's not hard at all but my downfall is being lazy and not having the proper foods.  Anyway, just wanted to say hi and maybe commiserate with others with GD.

Have you started your daily testing yet?  If not, don't worry too much about giving up your night out- you might not have to.  On my GD diet, I have to count my carbs, but I can have more proteins and fiber, so there are a lot of tasty choices that work for me when I eat out.

For lunches, I've found things at Wendy's, Burger King, and the local chinese place that I can eat.  I try and skip the fries for salad or a potato, and save half (or more) of my rice for leftovers.  I've also found frozen meals that work for me.

I even still eat dessert on rare occasions-and I appreciate it that much more for its rarity.  I make sure to have a protein (usually string cheese or nuts) with my sweet.

The things that do not work for me under any circumstances are delivery pizza and bagels (so I make my own pizza).

No not yet, I assume I will start Monday after seeing the dietician.  Thanks that makes me feel better about it, I was worried I could never eat out again or eat anything unhealthy ever.

  • Everybody's blood sugar is different, and yours will change throughout the course of your pregnancy. Once you start testing, you will see what your body can handle and what it can't. And even eating the same foods, you may get different numbers as your pregnancy goes on and the placenta produces more hormones. It really is just trial and error.

My GD is currently well-controlled, and I can still eat a lot of carbs while staying under goal. I just balance my carb intake with fat and protein and it slows the absorption. But, you need to find what works for your body. Don't let GD stress you out that much. It's for a finite period and you really will find the right balance for you.

  • Most restaurants these days have their nutrition information on line, so once you have your plan and know how many carbs you need to stick with you should be able to find things on the menu that could work with your diet. You'll just have to experiment a little to figure out which foods are your triggers and which ones work well. Like PP said, it is trial and error to figure out what works for you personally.
