Postpartum suggestions poll

Hi all! Lurking to ask a question. :)

I've heard things like witch hazel and tuck's pads are great for postpartum recovery.  What things were most helpful to have in stock when you arrived home from the hospital? I'd appreciate any advice in preparation!

TIA and congrats on all of your beautiful babies!

  • Other than what pp posted stool softner. I would wait for other things until you see what you get from the hospital. I came home from the hospital with a peri bottle, pads, tucks pads, and a spray that is supposed to help numb stuff. I asked for extra tucks pads before I left the hospital and didn't need anymore.

  • Crushed ice, witch hazel pads, peri bottle, big momma pads, hemorrhoid cream and a healthy side of self esteem bc you will be a sexy beast in grannt panties for the first month
  • This wasn't your question but if you have a two story house ask the hospital for a second peri bottle. I can't tell you how annoying it was to have the bottle upstairs when I was downstairs. I sent DH to the store to find something similar and he wasn't successful. Take as many things from the hospital as you can.

    •  Frozen peas in snack bags...froze them ahead of time and they were great disposable ice packs ( not too bulky, gentle and very malleable

    • I was prepared for a vaginal delivery but ended up with a c section. I had to send my mom out to the store to get large high waisted granny panties and hot packs for me.

I would also suggest tons of breast pads and lanolin cream.

This happened to me too. I had 24 pads with witch hazel frozen a week before I delivered... ended up throwing those out because I didn't need them. Take what you can from the hospital, and then get what else you'll need when you get home (or send DH out)

    • The frozen peas suggestion is a good one. I had 2nd degree tears. My hospital had these icy maxi pad things, and they were wonderful. I would have asked them for more to take home if I had thought about it. I also brought home a lot of the mesh panties and giant maxis, and that made it nice for staying fresh and not having to do laundry as often. Also nursing tank tops and a comfy robe.
    • The most beneficial thing I used PP was Earth Mama Angel Baby Mama Bottom Balm (find it on Amazon or Whole Foods). I didn't get it until a week PP, but ohmygoodness it was so soothing and helped me heal so much quicker. I loved it so much, all of my friends having babies are now getting it in their shower gift. It's seriously awesome.

I also second the idea for an additional peri bottle and get as many of the mesh panties from the hospital you can. Sure, they're not cute, but they're comfortable and disposable. I happily wore them for almost two weeks.

I stocked up on huge maxi pads but ended up not using them at all. I had a good stash from the hospital, but quickly moved to regular pads after a few days. So, like PP's suggested, don't buy too many things that your DH can run out and grab. It's nice to be prepared but my hospital sent me home with a good stash and I was able to go out a few days later and get what I needed.

    • Great suggestions so far! The only thing i would add is to ask for a "donut" from the hospital to sit on for the first few days back home. It made sitting after a second degree tear much more comfortable.

    • Other than big pads and ibuprofen, I'd wait to see what kind of delivery you have like PPs have said. The hospital takes care of a lot. Also, I was told not to use ice after the second day. I had second degree tears, the hospital gave me a peri bottle and pan for sitz baths, didn't need anything else. If you're breastfeeding, also get some good breast pads. My milk came in early (day 2) and had no problems, so I never needed nipple cream.

    • This sounds silly, but I had a planned csection and the dura morph made me super itchy. I was thinking that I wished someone would have bought me a backscratcher lol.

    • LMAO about the panties!!  So true!!

I had a c-section and all I needed was the huge pads.  (Make sure you ask for extra from the hospital too.)
