Healthy Snacks

I was hoping to get some good ideas for healthy snacking during the day, I know fruit, trail mix, veggies, but was hoping to find some that could still satisfy my craving for salty things as well. Also, a couple of other questions about food:

1. Is beef jerky ok in moderation?

2. Has anyone heard about pasteurized eggs? Are those necessary if they are cooked thoroughly?

Thanks!

Re: Healthy Snacks

  • GL now as for a salty snack I hear that a handful of almonds (lightly salted) or peanuts also lightly salted are OK! From time to time!

As for beef jerky (in moderation that is) might be somewhat questionable so I'd talk with my doctor first.

I don't know about the eggs so talk with your doctor on this also.

  • My understanding about the eggs is that they just need to be cooked thoroughly, no runny yolks.  I didn't think it mattered if they were pasteurized or not as you're already killing the bacteria by cooking them.

Hoping this one stays put a little longer

This.  As for the jerky, I think many OBs recommend avoiding nitrates.  If you have some that is nitrate-free, probably fine in moderation.

  • Yeah and its loaded with salt, less salt = less bloating and edema.  Try a handful of unsalted nuts for protein instead or an apple with peanut butter

Make sure you cook your eggs, or anything that can and should be well cooked

Few snack ideas for salty cravings:

Hummus (regular or spicy)and raw veggies

Ants on a log - (celery, PB and raisins)

Smart pop - low salt popcorn

Dill pickles (in moderation - high sodium but low cal)

Low salt organic tortilla chips and salsa

You can eat runny yolk eggs. You are far more likely to get sick touching the egg than you are from what is in the egg.

I love how jerky is terrible but peanut butter and all the crap that is in it is perfectly ok. You people are funny.

Agreed on the PB, natural PB is the best option...all it has are peanuts, or even better almond butter, more expensive but better choice :)

Agreed! Natural PB definitely tastes better IMO.
