Hi Baby Name Board,
I'm pregnant with my second child due in August and am having difficulty coming up with a girl name we love.
I am LOVING Winnie but, my husband is so-so and I would prefer it as a nickname for a more formal name, none of which I love. My favorite way to get to Winnie is Wynn(e), which I think sounds very elegant, but I feel like that is a little ethnic for an ethnicity that we are not. I'm not sure I like Winnie as as stand alone name and not sure it works with our last name, which is two syllables and ends in "ski."
Does anyone have any suggestions for other names that have a similar vintage nickname feel as Winnie? I feel like I have looked at every single name and can't find one that even comes close! Please help!!! Our first child is named Marie (which I love!)
Thanks in advance!!
Re: Girl Vintage-y Nickname Needed!!
Philippa (pippa or pippi)
Penelope (poppy or penny)
I was going to say Gwendolyn, like Winnie Cooper from the Wonder Years!
Teresa/Theresa (Tessa/Tess)
Joan (Joanie)
Elizabeth (Betty)
I always assumed her name was Winifred, it was Gwendolyn?!?
What exactly do you mean by that?
I think it sounds a little "trying too hard to be Welsh" and we are not Welsh. We are too 'mixed European' to have any strong ethnic identity and I don't want to feel like I am trying to pretend to have some historical ties I don't have.
I never would have even known it was a Welsh name. My first name is gaelic, and I'm not Irish
Willa
Lottie
Gwendolyn
Guinevere
Bronwyn
Elowen
Wilhelmina
Winifred
Bonnie

**RATE A NAME HERE!**
Here are some options that don't end in the "e" sound. Love the Pippa suggestion.
Cordelia - Cora/Delia
Rebecca - Becca
Delilah - Lila
Loretta - Etta/Retta
Sorry, I messed up the quote tree, but mj.reilly,
Thanks! I like MIllie and Camilla and never considered them together! I like Edie a lot but do not like Edith....I like Mina and like Wilhelmina but feel like it is a lot of name. I was considering Wilhelmina to get to Winnie too!
Yeah, I don' tthink it is tooooo ethnic, but, because it is a little less mainstream, I can just imagine a lot of people asking about the origin and if it is a family name and why we picked it and I would just be like....uh, I think it is pretty? I put it on kind of the same level as Svetlana. I like it and would consider it but would feel more comfortable using it if I were Russian. I think the more common an ethnic name becomes in the US the less of an issue it is.
Not a Winifred fan? There are other ways to get to Winnie, though they might be less intuitive. You could do Winona, or Gwyneth. Or even Wilhelmina/Willemina -- it has the "wi" and then an "n", though they're not right next to each other.
Here are some old-fashioned formal names followed by suggestions for possible old-fashioned nicknames:
Thanks for the suggestions! I like Elowen, but feel the same way about it I do about Wynn! I like Willa too, but my husband does not.
Thanks for all the suggestions! Wilhelmina is another of my top choices to get to Winnie, but it feels like a lot of name! I like Elsa/Elsie, that is cute! Wendy is really starting to grow on me too.
