Our plan is the delay clamping, but if I have to have a C-section, we will donate to a public bank.
We lost our first (EDD 07/23/12) after finding out at 12 weeks there was no longer a heartbeat. Our rainbow was born 05/22/13 and was worth all we went through.

My doc said that if I can afford to bank then bank. He's a believer in stem cell research and hopes that they will make advances in the future. I asked about extended clamping and his exact words were "ah, its bullsh!t don't bother" disclaimer: i haven't researched it myself yet so i don't have an opinionMy next question would've been... can I do both? extended and banking
Wow. Your doctor is a tool. You need to research cord blood. If its so beneficial to everyone, why on Earth wouldn't it also be for your baby? That would have been my last conversation with that doctor.

I looked into this with M and although it kills me... it just is absolutely out of reach. IMO it's one of those things where if it's so gosh darn wonderful and has all these miraculous medical powers they should make it affordable for the average person.
ETA: With M we were told several times by several different doctors and nurses that the delayed clamping was not really something they like to do and actually said it had the ability to harm more than help. I did research on it and didn't find anything significant enough to be like OMG DO NOT CLIP THAT CORD!! So I just let it leave my mind and whatever happened, happened on delivery day... I don't even remember.

I just took it as... extended clamping doesn't really do anything. Like maybe it doesn't actually go back into your baby. Like I said... I haven't researched so I couldn't really respond to his response. I actually really like him and everything else that he has said and done so I just took it with a grain of salt. After I research it on my own I can bring it up to him again and see what else he has to say. Or why he feels that way.
I honestly never heard of the extended clamping except for on the bump.
It's delayed cord clamping.

Carolyn, I first heard about it at our birthing class which was taught in our hospital and they discussed it briefly basically saying that many doctor's won't think twice about cutting immediately unless you specifically ask for it and we had to do our own research but in her medical opinion (She was a doc) there wasn't any reason to wait, it didn't make any difference.

Private banking isn't something we could afford, and the hospitals I've delivered at don't have donation programs.
DS1 we delayed clamping. DS2 we did not because he wasn't breathing at birth. If this baby has no issues, we'll delay.
Okay, I guess M did have delayed cord clamping. (How terrible that I don't remember right?!) My mom said the waited a full 2 minutes before clamping, she cut the cord, and "sucked" (excuse my poor medical terminology) her stomach out (because she had swallowed meconium) while they waited.
ETA: Completely ignore this. My mom is an idiot lol M's cord was clamped and cut without delay.

We haven't made a concrete decision yet, but these are points I've found in my research:
Banked blood is likely to be unable to be used by the donor, because the issues that develop in the donor are already in the blood (aka, many kids can't use their own banked blood). I'm looking further into this, because this would be a determinate between public or private for us.
Overall we're for banking, a friend passed on alot of info on the site she and her hubby used for their daughter, and seeing as it doesn't hurt our Baby's health, I'm not against it.
Basically we're still deciding the details of where, funding, etc.

So she's pretty much on the same page as my OB. hmmm I will do research before I make a final decision only because I like to read up on things on my own too.
Yes, so were all of the OBs in the practice we go to and the MW there too. AND our nurse at the hospital.

Upon further research and seeing all the studies done, I will definitely delay cord clamping 3 to 5 minutes. Of course that will change if he's born in distress, but otherwise that's the plan.
I'm surprised that there are doctors and midwives who say there is no benefit to delayed clamping when there are published, peer-reviewed reports which show benefits like higher APGAR scores, lower rates of anemia, etc. Not to mention that there is virtually no risk in most circumstances. So it seems like unless the doctor or midwife was in a rush to move things along (which, yeah, that is something they do quite frequently), there shouldn't be an issue to delay clamping.

I was just talking about this with a friend last night. i haven't done too much research on 'delayed clamping/cutting' but have looked up the donating the blood.
My question:
If I delay the cutting of the cord until it stops pulsing, does that mean there will be "nothing" to donate, stem cell wise?
We'll donate to our public bank. Our hospital has a great program with a fabulous educator and we did the same when C was born.
If we would need to the cells in the future and they are still available, they're ours (and the odds of them still being available are strong). If they are not still available we get priority as previous donors.
I have nothing against delaying cord clamping and would probably take advantage if my hospitals program wasn't so robust. However, because it is, I find it more beneficial to save the blood in case one of my child's siblings has a disease or condition that could potentially be helped by the cord blood than delay.
Wow, that sounds like a great program! I haven't decided/researched this issue much yet but I would love it if my hospital had a program like this! Off to check!
