Braxton Hicks

I'm sure this is a repeat, but I've got a patient waiting so no time to search :

Is it too early to start having Braxton hicks? I think I may have had one or two while sleeping this morning. I woke up with a tight sort of cramps feeling and when I put my hand on my belly it was hard. Being a FTM I have no idea what these feel like, it's no big deal either way I just wouldn't expect them to start so early.

Re: Braxton Hicks

  • Not too early!  Mine started a bit on the early side (16/17 weeks) - but now is about the correct time to be getting them according to my mayo clinic book.

So no worries!  I find it's a very definitive way to see how big my uterus is getting, because it makes it really easy to feel the outer edges of it!

  • Not at all. They actually start around 8 weeks but everyone is different in terms of when they feel them, or if they feel them at all. Did you have to pee? Having a full bladder will cause them. I started feeling them at 25 weeks with my first, 17 weeks with my second, and 18 weeks with this one.

  • Not at all. I have started getting them this week, mainly in the morning when I first wake up.

  • Related questions: for a while I was getting really awful cramps when I went to the bathroom first thing in the morning. Could this have been Braxton Hicks? It only happened a couple of times and then went away so I didn't look farther into it.
