American boy scout ban on LGTB members?

What??? I heard a discussion about the scouts reconsidering their ban on the news this morning. Some people were commenting that its big progress for gay equality but it just makes me so sad that discrimination like this still exists, I never would have thought an organization like scouts would have a ban like this.

This also makes me wonder how many parents who have sons involved with the organization even know this discrimination exists.

Several years ago they went all the way to the Supreme Court to defend their right to discriminate.

As I understand it, the proposed new policy would just push the decision onto the local level. There would be no national policy of discrimination, but there also would be no national policy allowing LGTB to be members.

You should google letters from Eagle Scouts who've turned in their Eagle awards. The pain and sadness they feel is just wrenching. But the argument they make, that discrimination is against all the Boy Scouts are supposed to stand for, is compelling.

I'm in Canada and there's no ban here! Id never consider scouts if that existed, still makes me unlikely to put my boys in scouts though. The ban was lifted 13 years ago here.
