I just learned that DS1's 20yo cousin was killed in a car accident earlier this evening. She was driving on bad back roads and went off the side of the road into a tree. Her fiancee and 2 young kids(3yo & 3month old) were also in the car but were only treated for minor injuries.

I'm trying to figure out if I should tell my 7yo son. He does not know this cousin very well. As far as I know only met her maybe 5-10 times. It's his fathers sisters child(mom was a teen mom). I figure since he doesn't know her plus I don't plan on having him go to the funeral because his fathers family and I do NOT get along(they don't like me, I don't like them) I shouldn't tell him. However, I'm afraid his father(who lives in FL) will tell him on one of his monthly phone calls. I don't think it will be a big deal if his father tells him and not me but I'm not sure. 

Any advice on what I should do?

Tell him but make it very matter of fact.  Meeting someone 5-10 times is a lot for a 7yo and it will be really weird to explain if the name comes up later.

Thanks ladies. I was able to talk to my mom. She told me I should ask him if he remembers her. If he does then to tell him. If not don't but still talk to his father about it. No his father will more than likely not be traveling up here for the funeral. For one he cannot afford to come up and for two he is also at odds with his family right now so not sure if he would want to cause any problems during this difficult time.

Your cousin xxx was in a really bad accident and she died.  Lets make a card for your daddy's family.
