High-Risk Pregnancy

GD or Diabetic mommas that have had babies

I would like to have skin to skin contact as well at be able to breastfeed right after birth.  I recall with my son that they took him right away worried about getting him checked out because of my high risk pregnancy and I didn't get to BF until about 20-25 minutes later.  If I ask for them to do this do you know if they will try to allow this request?  I may also request a delayed clamp on the cord.

TIA

Background:  I am on insulin currently (40 units before bedtime).  Not sure if that helps....

Re: GD or Diabetic mommas that have had babies

  • I had two GD babies and was able to do skin to skin immediately after birth with both. They tested the girls' blood sugar while I was holding them. They actually really encouraged BFing right away as it can help stabilize the baby's blood sugar if needed.

This.  They immediately put him on my chest and tested him while he was on me.   DS had low sugar.  They let me nurse him for awhile to try and bring it up, but at that point you really are not making much so we have to give him a little formula.  He BFed till he was almost 16 months.

Awesome.  I will let them know in a detailed birth plan this is the way I want it.  Hopefully no complications and things will be fine!!!

I have to have a csection, not GD related. My OB says they check baby as soon as she comes out and if she is fine we can nurse and do skin to skin while they are stitching me up.

I was able to do this with Dd2.  Hoping to be able to w/ this LO as well.
