10.5 month old waking up to eat at 3 a.m. (used to STTN)

Hi,

For about 2 weeks now, my DD is waking up anywhere between 3 a.m. and 5 a.m. for a bottle.  We've tried rocking or shushing and tried letting her fall back asleep on her own but she gets herself so worked up that it's almost pointless not to give in and give her a bottle.  The second she's finished eating, she falls right back to sleep.  I'm thinking this may be a growth spurt and HOPING it's not just a new habit we're contributing to.   She used to sleep 7-7 before, with the exception of waking up for her pacifier.  The pacifier is not doing the trick these days.

What do you think we should do?  Keep feeding her?  I'm afraid this is a bad habit we are contributing to but if she's really hungry, I want to make sure we feed her.

Thanks!

  • If she's actually drinking the bottle, and is really hungry, keep feeding her. DS does this from time to time, and it does pass in a few nights, a week at the most.

  • yes, she is drinking the whole bottle.  That's why I've been giving in each night.  I'm going on two weeks though.  Starting to think there's no end in sight.

  • Yep, my almost 11 month old is doing the same thing too!!!!  I am exhausted.  I am going to cut out her sippy cup of water from 6pm till bed time
  • My DS did this for 3 straight months....7 months - 10 months!  He really was hungry and would nurse for about 20 minutes.  He eventually grew out of it and went back to his normal sleeping patterns right at 10 months.  Hang in there!  It sucks, but Ike everything else with our babies, it's just a phase.  Nothing lasts too long!

  • I concur that it will pass.  BUT.  I up the amount of food LO get when this begins and then push on through for the night.  With DD I am pretty sure I got up but I don't with DS.  I added a large snack to his evening so that he eats a hearty breakfast, snack, lunch, a large snack around 4pm then dinner about 5:30-6.  That stopped it.  By snack I always mean a small version of a meal so like diced leftover ham steak with 1/2 banana or something or 1/2 peanut butter sandwich with a little tub of madarin oranges or something of that size.

I love the pic of LO crying on Santa's lap ...

DD2 is doing this now. For the past two nights, wanting a bottle at about 2:30 am. I don't remember DD1 doing it, but once she was out, she was out. I hope its a phase. DD is always a happier baby when she's full.

  • My DD has been doing this from 9-10.5 months also and she's geniunely hungry.  IF you can get your LO to eat more at dinner I'd push dinner later and try that.  Unfortunately my DD won't eat much for dinner and will only take a 3-4 oz bottle at bedtime so we're having a tough time getting her to sleep.  (OH, and we also dream feed her at 10 pm before we go to bed, so really she's still getting 2 bottles a night).
