Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Not chewing, swallowing, or drinking

My LO just turned 10 months and I'm starting to get concerned that he's not hitting all of his developmental marks. He was a preemie so I do expect some things to be delayed and he does have some medical issues, Im just worried. He's not pulling to stand or crawling, he honestly really just started rolling right around 8 months, he cannot feed himself ( he can pick the item of food up but he can't seem to let it o to put in his mouth), he won't drink from a sippy cup, and when I do feed him table food like toast or pretty much anything besides pur?es he will chew it up then spit it out as if he doesn't know how to swallow. I know, all kids develop at their own pace, but am I just being really high strung or should I really be worried???

Re: Not chewing, swallowing, or drinking

  • It might be worth a mention to your pedi but I wouldn't worry yet. DD2 didn't take to solids until close to 9 months, she didn't roll until 7, and she never crawled. She's 2 on Tuesday and is hitting milestones early or on time now.

How early was he? Preemie milestones are meant to go by their adjusted age, I think.

"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

  • He was 5 weeks early so I know he will be about a month behind. He also just got a cast off of his leg ( short story: I fell down the stairs whilst carrying him and broke his little baby leg). I just read a few other posts from the Msrch board nd it seems this might be common.
  • I can't imagine him being able to pull to a stand or crawl with a cast on his leg. My kid just started crawling just over a week ago, and his pedi was never concerned. He "could" roll, but never really chose to do so and screamed if he landed on his belly ever.

As for the the sippy cup, it has taken a very long time of offering a variety of cups at different times of the day to get any success with it. He still doesn't fully get how to hold it or tip it back though.

I think it's still good that your LO can chew food, despite the fact that he spits it out. It shows that he's learning to explore the food with his mouth but doesn't yet trust it to swallow it. It's going to take some time to learn how to swallow table food. Try offering other table foods/textures to let him explore with his mouth. He'll get it eventually. No worries!
