Success after IF

XP Lap and Adhesion ?

Question for those of you who have had laps ...

I'm scheduled to have my third lap for endo done next month.

The first lap I had done about 2.5 years ago showed Stage II endo and some cysts.

The second one I had done (6 mo post partum) showed it was back with additional adhesions that were causing my left tube to be stuck to the side of my pelvis.

I am wondering if I am making the adhesions worse/causing more adhesions by having surgery after surgery.

I am thinking about asking my doc if he thinks I should maybe skip the surgery, just do a HSG to make sure my tubes are clear and then go straight to IUI again.

What do you think?

Re: XP Lap and Adhesion ?

  • I've only had 1 lap, and it was done by my RE as it was during my IF work up that this came to be seen as causing my IF. I didn't even have an OB at the time so I never really looked at anyone else to do the surgery.

What I understand is that there are people who specialize at excising endo and adhesions in such a way that they are not supposed to return. As I understand it, very few people have these surgical skills, so most people don't get this kind of treatment.

If I were to get a lap again, I would consider seeking out such a specialist.

But back to your question I think if your tube is open but bound up with adhesions, your tube might not be fully functional and or you could be at a greater risk for ectopic. So from that point of view, I would want to make sure my tubes were healthy/adhesion free AND clear before IUI.

  • I think you're right .... it probably would be best just to have the surgery and make sure everything is "cleaned" out.  I just can't help but wonder if the surgeries have made things worse, ya know?!

As far as who does the surgery, I've just always had my OB do it.  He is definitely not a "specialist' in that area, but I don't know if there is really anyone in our area who is!  I think I might do a Google search and see.
