BF and caffiene

I know they say caffeine is safe in small amounts while nursing. Our LO is 5 weeks old. I gave up caffiene during pregnancy and the first few weeks she was born. A week or two ago started drinking a single cup a day. Well LO has been having an awful time in the evening. Screaming inconsolably for hours. It's not gas and she doesn't seem to be in pain. She actually acts overly tired and can't sleep.

My husband thinks its what I'm eating drinking, primarily caffeine. He's asked me to give it up. Does anyone think/know if such a small amount can be affecting her? I'm wiling to try it but didnt think my 1 cup would hurt her.

Re: BF and caffiene

  • I drink coffee in the am and sometimes throughout the day, I also drank it while pregnant in the am.  I do not notice a difference in my LO, she sleeps like a champ...

  • I drank one cup of coffee every day since I was 17 weeks pregnant and drink 2-3 cups now. I don't think it affects my DD. She sleeps around 20 hours a day!

Sounds like colic which peaks at 6 weeks old. I doubt it is caffeine related but you could always try and see it makes a difference.
    I agree.

  • Sounds like a rough "granny hour" instead of a diet issue.  Get the book/DVD Happiest Baby on the Block from the library & see if the 5 S technique works for you.  Our baby was inconsolable in the evenings for no apparent reason & Karp's trick works like a charm on him!

  • I have found it depends on the baby. It seems like some babies dont mind it and others do. Mine doesn't act any different if I drink it but if my twin sister does her LO is a monster! lol.

  • I think every situation is different and you can only test and see.  I drank caffeine with DS and it didn't bother him at all.

  • Babies get fussier around that age even those without colic. I drink tons of caffeine and my baby isn't very fussy and sleeps 810 hours straight at night. I'd guess it is more related to the witching hour/typical evening fussiness than a very small caffeine intake.

  • Eloise has a hard time latching and is fussy but I'm connecting it to the pretty amazing things a baby does to grow during this time not the one cup of coffee I drink a day. I really doubt it's the coffee but you can try cutting it out for a couple weeks to see if it was really connected.
  • Google purple crying, I bet that is what you are dealing with.

  • With my LO, I have noticed that ANY amount of caffeine affects her fussiness. Coffee, tea, anything with caffeine. She is definitely a happier baby when I avoid it. Yea, it sucks, but worth it.
