S/O Charlotte with nn Charlie

Let me start by saying I have never posted on this board, so hello everyone!  I was reading the post below about Charlie as a nn for Charlotte, and I tend to be in the camp that doesn't really care for the nn Charlie.  But I love the name Charlotte.  I understand I don't need to use a nn, but do you need to stay with the same for the whole sibset (nicknames or no nicknames)?  This is my first child, but I do generally like nicknames.  So if I have a child named Charlotte (no nickname) and then later wanted a child named Nicholas (called Nick) would that be strange?  Would it be better to stick with nicknames or no nicknames for the whole sibset?  Thanks!

Re: S/O Charlotte with nn Charlie

  • I think you're overthinking it. My husband is an Andrew with the nn Andy or Drew, and his half brother is John. It's never been an issue why Andy has a nickname but John doesn't. Charlotte is a gorgeous name btw, I'd definitely go with it :)

  • I see numerous posts about names and nicknames, and I've never understood the obsession with nicknames (as in choosing a name/not choosing a name because of nicknames).  Personally I choose a name based upon the whole name, and if it happens to have a nickname I like, great, but if not, it isn't the end of the world.  I think there are plenty of names that are nicer if you use the whole name, and I don't think it would be too difficult to correct someone if they tried to use a nickname/the wrong nickname.

Now to actually answer your question: no, I don't think it is strange to have one child go by a full name and another by the nickname.  I think Charlotte is a beautiful name as-is, and wouldn't think it was strange if she had a brother named Nick (growing up I knew a sibset of Charlotte (no nn) and Joseph (Joey))

  • IMO you can't necessarily dictate Nns. Little William might hate Willie, etc. it's ultimately up to the kiddo.

  • Couldn't her nickname be Char or Lottie?
  • I don't think it matters, my brother goes by a nickname and my sister doesn't. I do sometimes. My friend named her baby Charlotte, calling her Charlie from day 1. A lot of our friends agree its been hard to call a little baby girl Charlie. I prefer Charlotte.

  • Thanks everyone!  I was probably overthinking it.  I know that a nn won't always stick anyway, but I have gone by a nn since I was born and now my full name really doesn't even seem like my name.  I always know it's a telemarketer on the phone if they ask for me by my full name!

  • I don't think so, do what comes naturally.

My bff has Andrew, Nicholas/Nick, and Maxwell/Max. Andrew is 100%, Nicholas is 50/50, Max is about 90%.

  • I don't think it matters.  I have a long name with a nickname, and my parents wished they had just given me the nickname as a full name.  So my younger brother just has a "nickname" as his full name.  I'm the only one in my family that doesn't go by their full name.

Personally, I think it is just fine if one child goes by a NN and the other does not.

    Ditto. Don't overthink it.
