Booster seat vs Space saver highchair

I was needing some opinions and thought I'd check with you ladies.

I am getting rid of my 2.5yr old sons highchair and am looking to get a booster seat or a space saver highchair.

I don't know why I make everything such a hard decision - but I do.  I'm worried a regular booster won't be tall enough for him to reach the table and then I worry a space saver highchair he'd outgrow.

What do you use and how is it working? TIA

Re: Booster seat vs Space saver highchair

  • Get a booster.  The space saver is tall and the big between leg bump is hard for little ones to get in and out of by themselves.  Space savers are a *** to keep clean with a lot of crevices.  And the butt part of the space saver is tight for a toddler and he'd outgrow it real fast.

We switched ds from the space saver to a booster at about 2 1/2 and he did great.

  • Are you planning to have more kids?  If you're leaning towards yes, I'd get the SpaceSaver because you can start using it with very small babies and change the settings to adjust through larger toddlers.  If not, have you tried a regular seat?  DS started getting really irritated with the space saver around 16-18 months, and he REALLY wanted to sit in a big chair.  He has to reach a little bit to get his food, but he's much happier.  He will not sit in a highchair or booster when we go out to eat- only wants a "big boy" chair.  If you're not going to have more kids and the regular seat isn't working out, go with the booster.

  • We are planning on more that is why I was considering the space saver.

Thank you for everyone's replies so far.

  • We've been using this since we started feeding DD and it's been great. Cleans easily and folds up to travel.

  • I really like the safety 1st sit! Booster. It is easy to use and clean, has a higher lift than other boosters I was looking at, and it was only 10 dollars or so at Walmart.

I also liked the fisher price healthy care deluxe booster seat with tray. That would be a great option if you wanted to use it for a baby
  • I had two space savers for my twins and in retrospect would get the fp healthy care boosters w the tray and adjustable height. They are great bc if a little one can sit up well they can be in there and then they can use them a long time without the tray bc of adjustable height. Plus the back folds down so they are easy to travel with...my kids are 3 1/2 and still sit in them at our table when we all eat together...my son is especially messy w food so having him up higher helps contain that a little.

space saver has a nice really big tray and the tilting is good if you use it when they're young and holding a bottle but otherwise the arms make it hard to pull up to some tables, they're enormous to take anywhere if you want that option, they're a huge pain to clean.

  • We got this when LO was about 16 months old and he still sits in it.  Its totally fine, wipes up easy and was cheap.

  • DD and DS both sit in regular chairs at our dinner table. Depending on what's for dinner, they sometimes sit up on their knees to make eating easier. If you're really set on buying something... I'd do a booster over a space saver because it'll give LO more leg room and isn't as narrow of a seat, plus they're a lot cheaper and you don't need the full back and head support you would need for an infant.

  • My kids have both gone from high chair straight to booster at 9 months.  DS is 11 months (and short) but the booster is plenty high enough and I like a booster because it allows them to sit up nice and straight at the table.  He sits at the table and gets a plate like the rest of us.

This was at 10 months and was his first meal in the booster (so he was 10 months not 9 months)

  • We have a couple of different booster/high chairs.  One is the spacesaver.  We used the space saver with DD when she was an infant.  Then I got something like this https://www.walmart.com/ip/Summer-Infant-Deluxe-Folding-Booster-Seat-Neutral/8465713 because we were traveling and it was easy to take with us.  We moved DD to a booster seat at 15/16 months.

Since you already have a high chair for your next LO I'd probably get a booster seat.

  • We used to use the Space Savers until our boys were almost two.  Then we switched to boosters.  The ones we have have a little seat belt in them, so they're still "contained" a little bit.  I liked the SpaceSavers for when our kids were younger.
  • Our booster has three height ranges and works great at a table with six chairs. she used it even at 6 months. We just put towels in it.
