I highly recommend either doing a diaper trial (Jillian's Drawers has a good one) or buying only one or two diapers of each brand/style you think you might like. Then try them out for a week or two before you buy a whole stash and find out it's something you hate. You can always sell things you bought and didn't like.
Also different brands of diapers fit different babies well. So for example my tall, chunky thighed, 4 month old DS fits well in Bum Genius 4.0 pockets, but they were still too big in the legs for my sister's son when he was 4 months old. So it's really hard to recommend one type/brand that will work well for all.
As far as accessories, bare minimum you need a large wetbag or a diaper pail and a liner to store dirty diaps in, some CD safe diaper cream or fleece liners to use when you need to use non-CD safe cream, and CD safe detergent. (See https://www.pinstripesandpolkadots.com/detergentchoices.htm for a list of good ones.) Other accessories that are nice to have but not absolute necessities - a second large wetbag or pail liner for when diapers are in the wash, a medium wetbag for daycare and/or longer day trips, a small wetbag for the diaper bag, a drying rack, and a diaper sprayer for when LO starts eating solids.
Since you asked for suggestions of diapers to get started - if you think you'll like pockets, a lot of people like Rumparooz and Bum Genius 4.0s. The first run a little smaller the second a little bigger. I personally like All-in-Twos (AI2s) and use both AppleCheeks and Best Bottom Diapers a lot. I also like GMD prefolds with Sweet Pea covers - this would be a cheaper route to get started.
If you're looking to get started I would suggest a diaper trial. There are several online companies that offer them. Just google it. This way you can figure out what you like best before spending a bunch on one type of diaper.
Re: have another ?
To start you need to decide what direction you want to take this:
- pockets, all-in-ones, all-in-twos, prefolds/flats & covers.
Then you'll need somewhere to store the dirty diapers (pail liner or wetbag) and detergent.
If you have the time find a cloth diaper store near you and visit it. It really pays to look at the diapers and play with each type.
I'm assuming this is for your 4 month old?
